BG2 complains now and then about the disc being removed although I haven't touched it. Pressing esc or clicking "ok" when the notice pops up only redraws the notice window, however. Everytime I'm forced to go to console and kill -9 the wine process. It's starting to get irritating.

I haven't had the media-problem since I upgraded to unstable Wine 20050930. But the game still crashes now and then. Stuttering in sound was solved by switching from ALSA to OSS with winecfg.

Um... why do the directions have adding new games-blah categories? Why not just put these all in games-rpg (where, IMHO, they belong)?

Hi Voltago,

Great work here! I was just wondering if there are any plans to make an ebuild for the official Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter patch available on Sorcerer's Place? The link to the actual patch can be found at http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/IWD/howpatch141.exe if you are interested in looking into it.

Thanks

forgive my ignorance

but i am just not getting this

I saved the script in a text editor and made it executable.

I am not sure what to do now. I don't know where to "replace the parameter" or "feed into the script" the current .tar version.

When I double click it and tell it to run, nothing happens.

PostPosted: Sun Jun 04, 2006 5:56 pm    Post subject: Error installing BG1 Reply with quote

Hi!

I've been really happy with the ebuilds enabling me to install BG2..been playing it for a year now, at least.

Today I wanted to install BG1 for a friend to play but I ran into trouble:

Code:

>>> emerge (1 of 1) games-ie/bg1-0-r1 to /
>>> Downloading http://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo/distfiles/bginstall_wineprefix-20050111-r1.tar.bz2
--20:48:44--  http://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo/distfiles/bginstall_wineprefix-20050111-r1.tar.bz2
           => `/usr/portage/distfiles/bginstall_wineprefix-20050111-r1.tar.bz2'
Slår upp trumpetti.atm.tut.fi... 130.230.54.100, 2001:708:310:54::2
Connecting to trumpetti.atm.tut.fi|130.230.54.100|:80... ansluten.
HTTP-begäran skickad, väntar på svar... 404 Not Found
20:48:44 FEL 404: Not Found.
.
.
.
!!! Couldn't download bginstall_wineprefix-20050111-r1.tar.bz2. Aborting.

So it seems the ebuild is looking for a file in the main portage mirrors..is this something I should have downloaded manually? From where? Googling around I haven't found any mention of this problem so I guess it's just me :-p What am I doing wrong?

If there's somebody who's interested, we could try to work on it.

Hi,

Don't know what's the content of this missing file, I think it's just wine configuration.
I did following stuff, and it seems to work : I modified the bg1-0-r1.ebuild like this :

Code:

--- bg1-0-r1.ebuild.old   2005-06-12 00:46:24.000000000 +0200

So, I made a copy of the image in destination directory :
Code:

# cp -a /var/tmp/portage/bg1-0-r1/image/data/infinity/bg1 /data/infinity

and :
Code:

# chown -R root:games /data/infinity/bg1

And the game seems to perfectly work with wine 0.9.15, full ~x86.

Hey all. A friend of mine (who happens to be a fanatic about Baldur's Gate) really wanted me to play through so he let me borrow his copy. I have XP installed, but would prefer to run it in Linux if at all possible (especially since it seems that this game runs well). I tried both the most recent version of wine and cedega 5.somethingorother but in both cases the installer fails.

I did a google search and found these postings. The script seemed to work for the most part except for untarring the overlay (I'm not complaining, but thought it was worth mentioning) Anyway, I went to emerge the games and hit a snag with the bg1 emerge. Seems that the file 'bginstall_wineprefix-20050111-r1.tar.bz2' doesn't exist at that location anymore and google isn't coming up with anything. What was in this file and where might I be able to get a copy of it?

If this doesn't exist anymore, then is there another way someone could suggest I try installing the game in Linux (installing in XP and copying over is certainly an option, but would be a pain in the butt for me so I'd prefer to avoid that option)

From what I can see in the ebuild, bginstall_wineprefix is just a configuration setup for wine, which may be used by the installer for i5comp. This is a Bad Thing, since it breaks sandbox protections and clobbers root's wine configuration. Better would be to set environment variables as needed in the ebuild.

The following ebuild gets past the fetch/digest stage, but bails out when it starts trying to install stuff (die_if_empty from ishield.eclass gets an empty argument, probably the first time it is called). This could be a related to the WINEPREFIX stuff, but since I don't know what that does or why it was necessary, I'm stumped. Voltago, if you're still around could you help me figure this out?

Note: This is/was just a quick attempt to fix the ebuild. I am seriously considering rewriting this (and probably the others as well, where needed) to use app-arch/unshield rather than i5comp, thus removing the build-time dependency on wine.

First, I want to send a huge thank-you to Voltago. I'd been intending to play through BGII again, and I wanted to avoid having to reboot into Windows to play. With the ebuilds here, I've played through all of BGII and am nearly done with ToB.

Second, I want to list a few changes I needed to make to get BGII to run. (I'm using the standard wine-1.1.9 ebuild, in case that makes a difference.)

  • The system couldn't see the Baldurdash and official-patch add-ons. I was able to get them to work by mounting them under ~/.iegames/bg2/mods. (A symlink was not enough because the scripts look for plain directories. I created two directories there and used mount to bind the appropriate /iemods directories. My /etc/fstab now contains:
    Code:

    /iemods/baldurdash-tob /home/cpovirk/.iegames/bg2/mods/baldurdash-tob none auto,rw,bind 0 0
    /iemods/bonusmerchants /home/cpovirk/.iegames/bg2/mods/bonusmerchants none auto,rw,bind 0 0

    With that done, I was able to install both. (I think I may have believed that one of the two had properly installed before my modifications, but I was wrong.)
  • I had to replace the link ~/.iegames/bg2/profiles/default/keymap.ini with a copy of that file so that I could edit it. I think the BG2 configuration program tried to write to it, and I'm not sure that this was a problem until I installed the patch using my above method.
  • I had to use 1024x768 (or probably anything lower) resolution and run in windowed mode. Otherwise, the screen would go blank when I tried to start BG2, and I'd have to use alt+F4 to exit. It's important not to click outside the windowed area, or the game locks up. Certainly you'll want to use full-screen mode if it works for you, but if it doesn't, windowed may still work.
  • I have a note that says it helps to turn off the Guifications plugin for Pidgin, which I always have running. I'm not sure why this is, but maybe it helps.

Next, some notes on other problems:

  • I've experienced some crashes, but if my memory of playing the game years ago in Windows is correct, I'm not experiencing more problems now than I did then.
  • I also occasionally lose audio. Switching to the map and back to the game screen seems to restore it, as does saving the game. I forget whether this problem existed in Windows.

Finally, I put together two other BG2 ebuilds. One is for Near Infinity (though I'd recommend Shadow Keeper if you just want to edit saved games; it works well under Wine). The other ebuild is for the bonus merchants from the Bonus and Collector's Edition CDs. For the latter, I had to add a line to my /etc/fstab similar to the ones for Baldurdash and the official patch:
Code:

/iemods/bonusmerchants /home/cpovirk/.iegames/bg2/mods/bonusmerchants none auto,rw,bind 0 0

Thanks again to Voltago, and I hope this is useful to someone else trying to get the game to work.

I have updated the bg1 ebuild so that it no longer uses i5comp21.rar or bginstall_wineprefix-20050111-r1.tar.bz2. As a result it no longer has
Code:

DEPEND="bg1fivecds? ( || ( app-arch/unrar app-arch/rar )
                        app-emulation/wine )"

Here is the ebuild:
