ok ...you have the -s flag for finding the desired package ....but it only works for names
...you have the portage tree in /usr/portage ...with changelogs in it

...but is there an option to get more info (descriptions) about an ebuild ...and while were at it: to search through those descriptions

...you know ...if you are searching for an app, but you don't know the name ...or you're looking for an alternative app ...or you want to know more about the app before you download it

emerge -s, then follow the URI after "Homepage: " ;-)

emerge -S (capital s)

i know that ;) ...i just wanted to know if there was a database that includes all that plus some more info in one place (that with the homepage is a bit awkward to do everytime)

...i think it would make portage even better ...it would all be more coherent, don't you think?

i mean: a lot of less experienced users would really enjoy that, because most of the programs they don't know about (i have to confess that i had a few problems with some of the apps too  ...unreal and quake for one thing i don't know if they are demos, full games or engines - it doesn't say using the -s flag)

no, not at all. portage is a package management system, not a search engine. if you add too many features to portage you will end up with a tool similar to emacs ;-)

i agree ...but a tool that would take over this task would be most welcome, don't you think? ...so we could let portage do what it can do best and have a search/info tool

i don't know ...it could be either an app running in console (a x port would be also welcome :)) ...or it could be a secition on the gentoo.org page
i would prefere the app (and a x port) :)

in any case it should have a database of every ebuild there is ...that's logic :)

a good idea would be, that it would, if asked, provide info about previous ebuilds ...but by default it would give info about the curent ebuilds in the portage

about the app itself, it would need to be able to search using (a part of) the name, the section it's located in (e.g. x11-apps, app-system...), a short description, and special characteristics
upon finding it, it would provide all the info (complete name, version, section, description with characteristics, homepage (and maybe even some user comments and help about installation, if it's uncelar)

...that's all i can think of right now :)

Adding more information would probably slow the system down. As Gentoo is geared to those with broadband, I don't see how visiting a website to find out more on a package is an issue.

Sounds like bloat in my opinion.
