Hey everyone

We need your help testing this release candidate kernel for a new PPC Live cd (yes you heard right, Live cd for PPC). First of all we need to test this kernel very thoroughly though.

I would urge that if you can, please download this kernel and test it for booting on any and all PPC boxen you may have. What we are looking to make sure is that it a) boots your machine, b) your ethernet drivers are working and c) you can see any and all drives you may need to install with

What the kernel doesnt have:
1) XFS (there won't be newer PPC kernels with XFS for a while, it's proven to be unreliable and requires some major kernel modifications)
2) Sound card support (not really needed for install, and can cause more problems that it is worth)
3) modules (there are no modules included with this yet, all the main stuff is build into kernel).
3) Radeon 9000 support. The PPC kernel guys are working night and day on this, but it's not yet ready to go. Radeon 9000 users _should_ be able to use video=ofonly at boot time to use OF video though.

What specificall needs to be tested:
1) newer hardware support. This kernel should (in theory) boot almost all if not all the new apple hardware with varying degrees of support. Because I am poor i cannot verify this first hand and need everyone's help.
2) The OnBoard NIC on the newer Dual G4 machines (windtunnels), as well as the ata100 bus on them. Not sure if either will work or not.
3) Any users that had issues with previous ISO kernels should try this one as it should fix most of the known issues to date
4) everything else I have fogotten

Any success and/or failure reports would be greatly appreciated. The sooner we can get this kernel hammered out, the better.

Here's the URL:

http://cvs.gentoo.org/~gerk/test_kernels/vmlinux-2.4.20-rc1-ben0

Thanks everyone and happy Gentoo'ing

Gerk

No burning involved, this is just a kernel to test

azote:

so just follow the steps per gentoo install manual on installing a kernel, but instead use that as the source. (ie unpack it in /usr/src/)

It doesn't seem like it's packed, and it doesn't seem as the source code either - it's just a binary bootable image of the kernel, isn't it?

If so - it's supposed to be placed in /boot, defined with one more appropriate entry in /etc/yaboot.conf and chosen with your next reboot - that would be a test plan.

As for the source code - the one of this (being tested) kernel is in sys-kernel/ppc-sources-dev - just emerge it and build it. For version info check Makefile in /usr/src/linux-2.4-20-trance - first lines say it's 2.4.20-rc1-ben0.

I use my custom build kernel of 2.4.20-rc1-ben0 and don't see any difference with same custom build 2.4.19-r6.

Tomorrow I am going to reboot a couple of PPC boxes into binary downloaded 2.4.20-rc1-ben0 and see what problem it can bring.

so I just have to copy it to my /boot/vmlinux ??(using cp)

Yes, it is a binary kernel, but don't replace your current vmlinux with it, its jsut for testing purposes. Check out the PPC faq for more info on yaboot and how to setup multiple kernels.

I tried it on my ibook2 (with radeon mobility M6 LY)
big showstopper is the keymappings which is all messed up, in X as well as in the console (I had the same problem once when I configured my kernel for a US keyboard while it should have been MAC-US. Maybe same problem here)
network (sungem card) seems to work (could log in via ssh)
cdrom works as well.

A bit off topic, but does this kernel also bring dri driver for my radeon mobility M6 LY ? (I would love to play tuxracer on the train when I come to work :-)

Greetings,

No this kernel is made for booting + installation only. The X stuff is not of concern. For the keymappings, I don't think a kernel can have any affect on that AFAIK ;)

I'm mostly concerned that it boots and you get console video + ethernet more than anything.

Thanks

Yes, off course, you're right, it's in /etc/rc.conf that I have "mac-us" as keymap. Should it be "us" for this kernel then?
With "mac-us" everything works with my ppc-sources kernel but not with your kernel. Or is all this of no concern?

It boots with ethernet and console video on:
Gentoo-1.4-rc1 (installed from ISO-Nov-2)
PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics - old gray-G4-AGP-400Mhz
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 RF/SG AGP
PCI bridge: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21154 (rev 05)

Due to ide-scsi driver it meet some I/O error messages () with /dev/hdd (zip-100):
Code:
hdd:<3>ide-scsi: hdd: unsupported command in request queue (0)
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 0

Tested some emerges - works.

Let me know if any details are needed.

Excellent thanks, the zip thing is known, without a zip in the drive you will see that on a regular basis :)

Any other testers? (please :D )

Kernel boots ok on my Powerbook G4 (rev-III) 667mhz/512mb running 1.4rc1 and using ext3 as filesystem. Aiport, ethernet, cdrom and video all work as expected.

Did not test extensively, but everything seems alright.

Excellent :)

Anyone else? I just want to make sure it works for most machines, would be really great if anyone can test on new hardware, i.e. Xserve, windtunnel macs, new tiBook, (or buy them all for me to play with and I can test myself :D )

I'm using a newer (3 months old) uniprocessor G4. I'm on 1.4_rc1 with ext2 for my filesystems... just booted using your kernel. Everything looks fine.

umm... how can i get an iso to install this kernel? i can t seem to find any ppc isos to install 1.4, so how do i get this system installed? i couldn t get 1.2 to see my network card, and since i love gentoo so well on my x86, i ve been waiting for the final release so there will be new isos for PPC.

are all the people who are running 1.4, did they upgrade from 1.2 installations?

quicksilver 733, nvidia, apple LCD

I followed Gerk's advice in another thread; I booted with the 1.2 CD, then I downloaded the stage 3 tarball for 1.4_rc1 and installed that.

can you try booting that test kernel with video=ofonly option passed to it on your new ibook? The readeon card in that unit is not yet supported by the kernel, but there are some patches that might get it working due any day.

The unresolved symbol troubleshooting effort has gone to release_console_sem unresolved.

That's interesting, what I noticed was that the console goes black until system services start launching (you know, with the "[ok]" messages). Hope this info helps Gerk :)

Gerk,

Tested with this kernel once I got the brand spanking new TiBook configured for Gentoo Linux. Like the iBook guy posted earlier, something is definitely fishy with key mappings. Keyboard is FUBAR booting with this kernel, but works fine with the 2.4.20-rc4-ben0 kernel I just built. I haven't got X installed yet, so this is just at runlevel 3/console. My rc.conf sets the key map to mac-us if that is of any help figuring out what is going on.

Built in ethernet appears to initialize correctly, and the machine gets me all the way to a login prompt. All good things, but I cannot attest to anything beyond that without a working keyboard.

Cheers.

Hmm ok, I'll have to do some head scratching about the keymapping stuff, but glad it kicks the other stuff over.
