Just for kicks, im trying to get an emulator to run one of my beloved sega cd games, Sonic CD. Last Night I tried the linux version of Gens and it seemed to work ok except it wouldn't play the audio tracks... I then looked into the helpfile and it said the mp3 playback was broken... so I try the lastest version from sourceforge (rc3) and the help file still said mp3 payback was still broken so then I remembered the windows version worked perfectly so I thought why not try it with Wine? I emerged it and behold wine ran the win version of gens.... but only if the sound is turned off... If I try to enable sound, the emulator would start to load the game but then it would hard lock...
Any Ideas? Thanks for reading my long description.... |

I find that my SEGA-CD games work best under Kega, especially Snatcher. But I don't believe there is a version of Kega for Linux. You could give it a shot in Wine though.
Long live Gillian Seed from Snatcher. _________________ NeoGeo, PC Engine, and NES for life! |

Quote: | RC3 plays the ISO/MP3s here (as long as the name is the same -- i.e. sonic.iso, sonic02.mp3, etc). Give it a try |
You sure RC3 does it? I read in the readme file that it was still broken... ah well I will take another crack at it and let ya know.... |

*starts up Gens 2.12-rc3*
*File->Open ROM->sonic.iso in directory with the mp3s* (1)
*title screen plays music, stages plays music*.
Yep.

I can hear all other sounds and even the past music (cuz its pcm) but alas no mp3 playback... I am starting to think this is because of ALSA... Can I ask what is your sound configuration? |

ALSA from 2.6.7 kernel, no sound servers (aRTS and the like) using snd-cs46xx (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz).
Sure your ISO and MP3s are named correctly, same case and all? (sonic.iso; sonic02.mp3, sonic03.mp3...) I'll check to see how I set up mine; all I know is that it didn't work with the older Gens version and now it magically does with -rc3.
Edit: Make sure Sound->CDDA is checked _________________ WARNING: this post may be filled with lies and/or extreme sarcasm.

Dunno what to tell you, then.. I even went so far as to redownload the -rc3 release from SF, recompile, and run it to make sure. Works great. _________________ WARNING: this post may be filled with lies and/or extreme sarcasm.

Ya I got a feeling its because of ALSA and my onboard sound... I am gonna try messing with some software mixing to see if I can try to fix it... |

Out of all out honestly, your wasting your time with on-board sound. I just recently went out and bought a $30 SB Live card and it has been so much easier and just plain more reliable. But if it is just plain not an option to get one (like it was for me financially for a while), you could give a >=2.6.8 kernel a shot. It seemed to help me on a few problems with my internal realtek sound. And if you can, see if you can enable mmap for your internal sound as well. _________________ NeoGeo, PC Engine, and NES for life! |
