kernel panic: libXrender.so.1

I managed to mess up my installation somehow and now I cannot login.
On the boot I get kernel panic: error while loading shared libraries: libXrender.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
I logged in using LiveCD and mounted my boot & root partions and did a search for libXrender.so.1 and found it in a couple of locations.
What can I do? I dont want to format & lose all the data.
