Okay I'm not sure how, but finally my CD-RW drive works. Now the next problem. I burn now with cdrecord only, I don't use any GUI for that stuff.
Here's the problem. When I burn a CD, my whole system locks up. I mean, it burns... but still, CPU useage goes to 100% and stays there... and the mouse I can't even move... locks up until it's done burning. Occasionally, it'll update the display and I'll see what speed it's burning at. Sometimes, it goes as high as I set it, but when the buffer gets low (not the FIFO buffer), it goes down to like 8x and slower... that normal? I guess that's burn proof? Dunno.
But anyway, why does my whole system lock up like that? I think it's my motherboard. ABit KT7A-RAID here.

Try to set UDMA in bios to auto, and do a "hdparm -d0 /dev/hd?", to turn off dma on your cd.
Just an idea... |

Okay I just cheked the BIOS. It was set to auto. That didn't help.
I tried the hdparm thing:
Code: | [/home/cmiller]# hdparm -d1 /dev/cdroms/cdrom2
/dev/cdroms/cdrom2 not supported by hdparm |
I think it's doing that b/c I have to use ide-scsi emulation in order to get it to see it under cdrecord.

You need ide-scsi, but you cannot use hdparm in a ide-scsi'd device.
The way to go here is to make sure you have DMA enabled in your kernel and also the correct chipset for your motherboard. This should make it work correctly. |
