I use -ck patchsets and I wondering what kernel everyone else runs. -ck is great for the desktop and updated often.

2.4.20-ck2

I hear the gentoo sources are updated often, but I like playing a lot and trying different ones out.

I have both the regular gentoo-sources and the development-sources emerged and the kernels compiled and installed.

Currently running the 2.5.53 with both IPv4 and IPv 6 installed and configured.

Before Gentoo-time, when I used to run Slack, Alan's kernel were great, though many ppl said that it's very unstable and so on it never happend to me. When 2.2 was latest stable, I ran 2.3 and they worked fine too.
Unfortunnaly I can't get 2.5 to compile with my preferences...But I'll try to fix it...BTW, 2.6 is almost ready so I guess it's time to start messing around with 2.5 =) .
And you guys say that -ck patches are good for desktop. Gotta check it out!
Cya!

Running vanilla 2.4.20 right now, had ACPI patches + 2.4.20 working on my 1.2 box, but have not gotten it working with 1.4rc1. Go figure...

I'm using -ck2, too, but not the full patch. Con Kolivas' site offers single patches, so if you, for instance, don't need ALSA, you don't need to patch your kernel sources with it.

The ck-sources ebuild also misses the extra patches package from
http://kernel.kolivas.net.

Quote:
The extra patches: extras_ck2_2.4.20.patch.bz2
Contains desktop tuning, variable timeslice, lower disk latency and compressed caching - less tested but good additions to a desktop pc

This seems to be a lot more interesting than the plain 2.4.20-ck2 and I haven't had any problems with the extra patches (not using compressed caching as it's unsafe with a preemptible kernel and ext2/ext3).

Suprisingly few use 2.5 kernel, I use it back since 2.5.30 or so (2.5.53 in now) and I've never had any kernel issues whatsoever, it's been problematic to compile from time to time (especially ACPI which finally are starting to stabilize) but once compiled it's solid and atleast as fast as any other kernel I've tried, and I've tried most of them.

I'm on an old system so I don't really choose kernels based on performance, I just want the latest and greatest to feel that my system is running at it's best, which is why I always tend to use bleeding edge stuff.

Try 2.5 series, the more that use it and report bugs the better the nexgen kernel will be.
