where are the packages installed

When i emerge a package, the file is downloaded.
But the file i have is corrupt, so i want to delete it. ( some .tar.gz / tar.bz2 file)
Where could i find those files, so it can be replaced with a fresh one.
When i delete the files in var/portage gives no solution.

( i know the file is md5 checked and is ok, but i have to use a modified one )

/usr/portage/distfiles is the default location.
