'sup
Could someone describe the whole startup process .... I'm comming from Mdk/RH and know their startup and where i can put config files..
For example there to put iptable rules.. what if i want a special scritp to do this but not simple rules ...
I seems that /etc/conf.d is what /etc/sysconfig is for mdk..
... things like that... !!!
Some things can be gathered from rc guide but this is only the surface...
Also the module.conf stuff i.e. /etc/module.d, module.autoload,....
Small parts are described in diff docs ... but not the whole init....
who will step up and explain in detail :")) |

not me
seriously, what you are asking for is a very long detailed explanation of something you can rather easily find out yourself. as soon as you need to interfere at some point, it only takes a short time to figure out how it's done (for those things not explained in any guide) - I used suse for years and never understood their structure, with gentoo everything became clear to me much faster!
(okay, not what you wanted to read, just my 0,02 )

:") i think such a thing will be helpfull ....
For example things that are not understandable at first time.. let me tell my findings...
/etc/conf.d - most config stuff goes here... these include all devices setup.
/etc/modules.d - here goes all device modules info..
i.e as in others distros the sequence is bring devices trought their modules and then configure them..
What is not vieweble from first sight is that for modules u have to call update-modules... Don't get me wrong but anyone coming from mdk/rh camp will go and edit directly /etc/modules.conf , which is not good practice under Gentoo...
Yes most of the things can be traced if spent alot of time with the startup scripts ... but this in long term is wrong... why ?
"cause if there is no clear picture what is really happening ppl will place stuff whenever they seem is right for them and not where it has to be by design...
I have seen many such cases and it makes things unpredictable when u have to manage such installations .....
PS. Fresh example I had to configure a Debian for one my friend (i haven't used Debian till then) and his ISP sysadmin has put ipchains-masquerading into his /etc/init.d/network script and so every time I do "network restart" a new MASQ is added ..agrhh.. and the excuse of the sysadmin was that he has not used Debian but Slackware...
My point is that it is true that this is not the case only with Gentoo, but why not the Gentoo to be better documented.... :")
Almost all of the docs I've read for Gentoo was very good |

Umm, the install guide makes it all pretty clear - and if you've got a gentoo box, you probably followed it...

yep ... but this document describes the services stuff and how they are handled.... not what is the sequence from booting to the working system ...
which was my original question.
PS. ..... if u look this my question is still unanswered :")
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=23048
u can find it interesting to see that my other 4-5 questions are all answered, but this wasn't and it is related to my current question. :")
In short it is about removing gentoo-iptables-script with my own... |

Sorry, that's some deeper voodoo that I'm familiar with as far as Gentoo is concerned. I have that info for other distros, but I'm too new to Gentoo to answer this one... _________________ Linux user off and on since circa 1995 |
