Just wondering whether anyone here has tried the Windows XP 64 bit edition?
Primarily for java development.
Is there any noticable difference? _________________ Truth lasts longer than lip service

I tried it. It was very unstable. Wasn't usable to me. MB: MSI FISR-NEO2. |

I tried it. It was alright, but quite unstable. A lot of stuff just didn't work. Better to stick with 32-bit windows (or no windows at all). 32bit is quite snappy. Sometimes seems even faster than the 64bit one.
Cheers,

I have used it aswell. Most of the apps are still 32bit running through the WOW (Windows On Windows) DLL. I wouldn't consider it worthwhile yet. |

I tried it out very recently. It was stable enough for me. Not really worth it ATM though, scarcely any 64-bit Windows apps to take advantage. _________________ "If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." -- James Madison |

I tested the latest and greatest build of Windows XP 64 bit on a Intel nacona test machine recently. It seemed 'fairly' stable although I didn't test for very long.
Biggest drawbacks (and reasons I couldn't test much):
On installation Windows would not automatically load 64-bit drivers for the very standard Adaptec SCSI card. Furthermore its 2004 and this installer can still only read Floppy disks and drivers must be in the root level directory! To make matters worse when I loaded the floppy disk with the drivers I received a message to the effect of "Windows has a newer version of this driver would you like to use that?".
Intel network card had no 64-bit drivers.
System could not read a standard DVD-R. (and yes it could with Linux/Windows XP 32-bit)
Good news is, this box runs great with 64-bit Linux.
Bad news: I'm stuck using 32-bit Windows on my amd64 Laptop for now. Of course I dual boot w/ Gentoo |

I have a shuttle - sn85g4. When I installed XP64 the screen was off the side, which meant looking for 64 bit drivers. I literally used XP64 for a few minutes before wiping it off my harddrive. Just not worth the effort - especially when it's Windows |

I haven't bothered... it's unlikely to improve my Doom 3 framerate all that much ... interested to hear of others' experiences, though. _________________ If your question was answered, please edit the first post and add [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks! |

I managed to get some games installed, but did not see any appreciable difference in framerate. This makes sense, though, they are all 32-bit code. _________________ "If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." -- James Madison |

First of all the WinXP64 boot CD did not detect my HD (SATA was unsupported). After downloading a driver and copying that on a floppy, I was able to get it to detect the drive and proceed with the installation. Several reboots later it turned out hardly any piece of hardware was detected. After I downloaded and installed a driver for the onboard ethernet chips, I think I got networking up (requiring several more reboots of course). I've never been able to properly use it though, because WinXP consistently locked up within 10 sec after logging in.
Needless to say that I wiped it off my HD at once ... |

Only reason I ask is so I can run 64bit JDK. _________________ Truth lasts longer than lip service
