I have a friend who would like to start playing some MMORPG game - he never did it and he wanna try it out. He doesn't have any preferences or requirements. It just needs to hook him to it... magic, space shooting whatever... and he runs windows, so it doesn't have to be Linux friendly game.

So the question is: What would you recommend?

I told him, the best MMORPG I've played was Earth & Beyond, but its just me and I didn't played others as much as E&B, so I am asking you.

What MMORPGs are your favourites?
If you write a title please write in one sentence why do you like it.

Thx

Well, if he's the build-and-expand Civilization-playing type (though it sounds like he isn't), I'd suggest A Tale in the Desert. It hooked me good. There's a linux client, too. Free 24 hours (play time, not wall time) for starters, $14/mo after that.

Ragnarok Online is a nice mmorpg
I'm playing it because of:
-addiction
-fantasy world with anime design
-fun player vs player and guild vs guild
-it runs on linux with cedega
-free servers running emulators or leaked original server software :)

Yes, Lineage, looks very interesting IMHO. I am sucking the movies to check it out.

Btw: what class do you play in Lineage?

I second the World of Warcraft vote. My roommate is in the beta test and let me play for a couple of hours. It's much more fun then I thought it would be (I don't normaly like MMO games).

Yeah its nice, but at the moment you can't do much more then walking around and collecting crystals. I can't wait for the next version with combat (its comming soon).

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Vendetta yet! I've just picked it up again, and it's better than ever. It's available for the three OS's.. Windows, Linux, MacOSX. The beta just started, and apparently you have to give them your email and they tell you when a space becomes free.. I don't know how long that takes because I already have an account. Check this thread

I really like it because it's a space shooter aswell, which actually has fun combat, unlike all other mmporpg's I've tried.

Vendetta looks nice - its my type of game. I've signed for an account also. Hope we get one ;)

I've never really liked magic, spells, elfs, etc... I prefered space shooters, but after this tread I"ve checked some of the games here mensioned, and I must say I will definitly try WoW, after reading the FAQ and watching videos I really like it. EQ2 didn't impressed me that much.

I added poll, so which one do you anticipate more? Wow or EQ2?

recommended:
meridian59 - if you like pvp and soloing
daoc - if you like pvm in groups

semi recommended:
star wars galaxies - an improved daoc , but no point in playing more than 2 months, also soe product = high price.
asherons call 1 - sortof a better meridian59 , but either you pvm and get bored fast or play on darktide (pure pvp) and live in hell, so to say.
neocron - was great in beta3, but the beta4 audience killed it.

not recommended:
eq - if you like to waste your time
shadowbane - where to start there's so much about this game that really sucks.
lineage2 - ppl actually play this crap?
anachy online - repetitive , pvp sucks , pvm sucks. game sucks

WoW will rock, I'm not sure about EQ2... but since I only play one MMORPG at a time, I'll have to decide (looks good for WOW so far)

I guess I'd play most MMORPGs, but as for what I've played before its Ultima Online
and Anarchy Online. Ultima Online is a bit old now for new players, and I kind of
fancy Anarchy Online a bit more right now. (Even though I don't play games).

Lineage II and A Tale in the Desert do look interesting though, I'd like to try them out.
That also goes for games like EQ2, AC2 and WoW too really.
