PostPosted: Thu Dec 19, 2002 5:02 am    Post subject: mozilla headers not available from sun - what now? Reply with quote

Trying your instruction to get java working, and I need 3 files from sun
- j2sdk-1_4_0-src-scsl.zip
- j2sdk-1_4_0-motif-linux-i386.zip
- j2sdk-1_4_0-mozilla_headers-unix.zip

I downloaded the first two, but the mozilla_headers-unix file is no where to be found. I did a search on the sun site and I cannot find it anywhere.

Where is this file?

Can I get java working in mozilla any other way (short of going back to gentoo 1.2)

Any help is appreciated.

if you go to http://wwws.sun.com/software/java2/download.html, follow the link that says "Download (Mozilla Binaries)"

As for a successful emerge good luck. I have followed all of these steps and every time I've tried emerging sun-j2sdk it fails about 3 hours into the build. I have found no answers in the forums to this problem.

Just finished the emerge of sun-j2sdk 1.4.0-r3. Mozilla (1.2.1) now regesters that I have JAVA!!!

It took just slightly less than forever to compile, but it did compile and install very cleanly.

One thing to note that wasn't pointed out, the Java sdk emerge needs 2GB. I don't normally have that much extra space in my / partition. But thanks to the wonders of emerge, all I need to to was point portage to a tmp dir I created on my /home partition (where I have most of my free space), with the following command:
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/home/tmp" emerge sun-j2sdk-1.4.0-r3.ebuild

Again, thanks.

Thanks! That worked! Just make sure to warn everyone that compiling moz takes a long time but compiling j2sdk takes freaking ages!

How do I take care of that?

Code:
root@gotohell andy # emerge -up sun-j2sdk

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies |
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy ">=virtual/jdk-1.4" have been masked.
!!!    (dependency required by "dev-java/sun-j2sdk-1.4.0-r2" [ebuild])

!!! Error calculating dependancies. Please correct.

If you mean the dependencies, try:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -up sun-j2sdk

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!

10 hours of unnecesarry-package-removal, wasted by ONE message... I DIDN'T have to do that.... Someone kill me please.... (Or the messenger... )

Hm... Well... I guess I should have known that... Why shouldn't it be possible?

I'll go find a tall building now... ;)

For all those still struggling, I finally got mozilla 1.1 to work with flash and java plugins. Here are my steps:
1. Remove openmotif and lesstif temporarily if they are installed:
- emerge -C openmotif
- emerge -C lesstif
2. Install mozilla 1.1:
- cd /usr/portage/net-www/mozilla
- USE="-gtk2" emerge mozilla-1.1-r1.ebuild
3. Install sun-jdk:
- emerge sun-jdk
- java-config -list-available-vms [look for the sun-jdk package]
- java-config --set-system-vm=sun-jdk-1.4.1.01 [or the latest sun-jdk]
4. Install flash plugin:
- emerge netscape-flash
5. Install j2sdk:
- emerge sun-j2sdk [make sure you have the r2 ebuild]
6. Reinstall openmotif and lesstif if they were installed
- emerge openmotif
- emerge lesstif

That's it! I hope this helps!

WOOHOO thank you!!! I was able to use this to FINALLY get java working with Phoenix-cvs! THANK YOU!!! I had already dones steps 2-4. Step 2 of course for me was emerge phoenix-cvs. :) I never had to uninstall openmotif or lesstif. Things appear to be working perfectly! I even have real audio plugin installed!!!

I redid the steps and emerged Mozilla 1.2b instead, and now I have working mozilla and java. :D There are a few pages that I visit, that still cause a complete shutdown. If any of you that followed the same steps, to get mozilla and java working together, visit http://www.maharashtratimes.com/, and tell me if mozilla closes down, I'd appreciate it.

FYI, phoenix cvs which == Mozilla 1.3 CVS + the phoenix chrome this does nto crash at all for me.

FWIW, I maybe have the same problem. Another piece of the error output

Code:

Current Java thread:

I've tried both blackdown-1.4.1_beta and sun-jdk-1.4.1.01 with the same result. Compiling all code from source is becoming much too time consuming to be fun.

I've read several places that mention the gentoo-sources are conflicting with the Java and vanilla works great. Any opinions/stats from those of you that have it working?

THanks

Why doesn't it work the traditional way?
I've always put mozilla to work with java by downloading the netscape 6 java plugin (the file is named jre.xpi), and (as root) double-clicking this xpi file.

This has always worked, but it didn't with gentoo...

Bye.

PostPosted: Wed May 21, 2003 9:05 pm    Post subject: Success - Mozilla Firebird CVS ebuild with Java Reply with quote

Just wanted to report success using the steps described earlier in the post, with a few modifications.

I don't think it's necessary to remove OpenMotif/Lesstif (at least not on my system).

I'm using :

gcc-3.2.3-r1
glibc-2.3.2-r1
mozilla-1.3-r1
sun-j2sdk-1.4.1

I've had Mozilla installed since 1.1, and Phoenix/Firebird since 0.5 (including some cvs builds using Xft).

One thing to note: I had previously symlinked libjavaplugin_oji.so from /opt/sun-jdk-1.4.1.02/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/ to /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins; this was not removed when sun-j2sdk was installed. I had to manually remove it and re-symlink using the plugin from /opt/sun-j2sdk-1.4.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/.

Also, I had to kill my ~/.phoenix folder and let Firebird recreate it in order to get the browser to open. Before doing this, I was getting a "expected version >5! Version = 0" error message.

I'm not certain, but I think the key is that the sun-jdk ebuild does not like GCC 3.2 or greater; this was mentioned earlier in the post. I'm not sure if the kernel version plays a role, but I'm using gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5, FWIW.

Firebird rocks!!! By far, the best *nix browser yet, IMHO! :D

PostPosted: Tue Jul 22, 2003 12:24 am    Post subject: Trying the JRE instead Reply with quote

For a smaller install, and to avoid downloading stuff I won't use anyway, I'm going with the JRE. Downloaded and agreed to the license, but the command

rpm -iv j2re-1_4_1_03-linux-i586.rpm

doesn't work. I tried

rpm -iv /home/brad/j2re-1_4_1_03-fcs-linux-i586.rpm

after checking the directory to be sure of the filename, but I get this:

glibc >= 2.1.2-11 is needed by j2re-1.4.1_03-fcs
/bin/sh is needed by j2re-1.4.1_03-fcs

I have libc-2.3.2, so that shouldn't be a problem. Don't understand the second statement, though. Can anyone help? Thanks!
