Agreed! The Aaron Shi design is nice but looks like it's trying to sell something for money.
I voted for Iris on Mirror. It looks more academic and elegent. I would tweak the color scheme though. The advertisements overshadow the lighter colors of the content.
The Aaron Shi design makes me want to hide my checkbook.

My vote went to: Charles-Andre Landemaine - gencorp
I peronsally feel that is the most professional looking and feeling template design. The Aaron Shi one seems a bit "out of place" with the car dashboard, and the whole "rocket fuel" sloagan... and is in my opinion ugly.
The Charles-Andre Landemaine - gencorp simply is the best out of what is available. I hope the gentoo webmaster choses that one. _________________ Linux. Freedom. Power. |

I agree 100%. That's the kind of page that makes me think, "These guys want to make money, they don't care about me"
My vote goes to GenTech _________________ aaarggghhhh.

I voted for;
Charles-Andre Landemaine - gencorp
It really looks far more professional than the others, I really don't understand why it's not leading the poll.
Fraud?
Nahh, but really, I really like the one I voted for.
I hope it wins (even though it's behind).
Here's an idea (probably been mentioned before, but still):
Put the (X)HTML in DIV's, give 'em class names and do every single layout aspect in CSS (as it should), then make a "theme"-switcher between the CSS style sheets.
Also a script which saves it to, say, a cookie or something (user-based site?).
Just my 2 cents.. _________________ - Agilo (Alessandro Lo-Presti) |

I voted for Aaron Shi with a couple of reservations. I agree with other posters that the slogans could go away and keep the banner simple. Also the graphic at the top of the main page could be a little smaller to allow for more initial content (I hate having to scroll right away to get to the content).
With that said I really like the layout and graphics at the top of the page.
I also liked the gencorp entry except the graphics were too large and took up too much space. The left side bar also took up lots of space. Again, I like the content to prevail.
All entries were great and I would be proud to produce any of them. Good Work Guys! |

I like the current design best. I've always liked the gentoo site.
Aaron Shi's page looks professional, but the "high performance computing" and especially the "rocket fuel not required" bits, as well as the race-car dashboard, are a bit macho for me. The professionalism inspires confidence in the product though, which is good.
Iris on Mirror's entry is nice and simple, but the color scheme doesn't work at all, and I much prefer the nice and simple design currently in use. |

I personally like "Iris on Mirror" because it does not use too many graphics. The colors can always be changed.
What I would have liked the most, is for the authors to submit a real html page with accompanying files. This is so I could see how it would really look and what techniques were used. |

I vote for the design of Aaron Shi.
It is the most beautiful, and has the most professional look.
However, at real design time he should keep in mind that the site must be easy to navigate. This means that he should add a menu as a sidebar like the current design, or an alternative of this sort.
Clicking 4 4 lnks just to get to the page I want is *very* pissing off. |

Aaron Shi's is really very professional and good... too much so... I think it has too much of a corporaty feel. On the other hand Iris on Mirror is clean, and very elegant, but I think takes alot from the Aquay look and feel people used to/still like, but kind of rips off apple. Anyway, despite that i voted for Iris on Mirror |

My vote goes to Iris design. Clean, no unnecessary pictures.... just looks great.
As some other members already stated, a bit purple could do the rest
I think, that purple colour gentoo.org is running with is a bit of gentoo's corporate identity.
Don't change the colour _________________ -->Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved.

+1 gencorp
Though I was most impressed by Aaron's design, it does feel too corporate - I hate the touch of green too. Iris is very nice too, I could definitely live with it if they changed its colours. _________________ ---

Nice work all, indeed professional to the point of too much a little. The first thing that came to mind for me too for most designs in fact was too corporate, it says a lot that many of us apparently had this feeling.
My vote went to Charles-Andre Landemaine - gentech because it stylish but at the same time has a very slight "slashdottish" or "nerdy-ish" touch.
Let's face it, Gentoo is not a corporate, led by hail-white-teethed greedy top managers type of OS, it's not about maximising profit and selling junk by brute-force marketing power. So: not too much corporate is better IMHO. (Actually my winning vote should get rid of thet politically correct cliché image of a succesfull woman + man in a clean office too )
But still it is that design that seems clean, easy to navigate, with the right touch. Go for it _________________ Cheers

Iris is my favorite - I'm an admitted minimalist. It would be even better, though, if it were a purple-based color scheme. _________________ no software patents in europe! | adopt an unanswered post.

My vote went to Iris on Mirror. I like that it is a simple, minimalistic design.
After reading some posts it seems that everyone doesn't really like the green. Everyones design seems so purple though and it seems like too much of one color. I know that purple is the gentoo color but adding another color to the mix just adds a little twist. The whole idea behind a color is stupid. It makes me feel as if I were in a linux gang and would have to flash my distro color.
Anyway I think that all the designs are really nice and I probably would be happy with any of the design. A web page design doesn't make gentoo itself better and if people don't like the website and decide not to try gentoo then its their loss.

I'm no web designer so no authority on the subject but I just want to say the designs are all very good looking! A couple of quirks here and there I didn't like about some but otherwise a fantastic job by all the people who submitted.
But a step ahead of the others is Aaron Shi. Iris on mirror would be my 2nd choice.
And since the poll results [so far] happen to coincide with my picks, I might as well take it a step further and complement the people who voted on their fine taste. _________________ undvd - ripping dvds should be as simple as unzip |
