Linux is just a kernel and is useless by itself it needs programs to go along with it. Also the GNU project has contributed far more code than the linux kernel project has. I think all references of Linux on the Gentoo website and forums should be replaced with GNU/Linux when refereeing it to the whole operating system. I would argue that the Linux kernel would be almost nothing right now if the GNU project did not exist. We would all be stuck with M$'s non-free software windoze. So please give everyone credit and say GNU/Linux instead of just Linux.

GNU/Linux sux's, can't do alot of things. It gets to to a command prompt.

instead of calling myself a linux user I shall henceforth refer to myself as a Linux kernel running a whole bunch of very much non-linux programs, such as those from the GNU project and freedesktop.org user. Or for short: bsd/mit/Xorg/apache/mozilla/sun/gnu/redhat/novell/ibm/linux user

Somehow, [he|she|it] is correct. There used to be a 'patch folder' in the ebuild but not any more?

There are no Gentoo patches whatsoever?

//edit: Like Windows NT, '8' or something

It seems like some people here hate GNU is that true? Also energyman76b brought up a good point the only time it needs to be called GNU/Linux is when you are using linux, the kernel with programs written by the GNU project.

not hate GNU, just hate the stance some ppl push that GNU is the be all and ends all with regards to a linux based machine... it isn't, its far from it

SO if you are one to push for GNU/Linux you equally have to push for bsd/mit/Xorg/apache/mozilla/sun/gnu/redhat/novell/ibm/linux as that is what a modern distro utilises
OR you can join polite society, stand a change of getting your dick wet and call it linux.

That is quite a good question. When reading about the history of GNU you will find that they had all components needed except a kernel. So you could consider distros that use software written by The GNU project a modified version of GNU. The GNU project did not get it's final component from microsoft and they did not get it from freeBSD so I think that in this case it would be a case per case basis it really depended on how much functionality the GNU software adds. If you feel that you benefit a lot from the GNU tools it would be fine to use GNU/Windows or GNU/FreeBSD. The reason why GNU/Linux should be used instead of is because lots of distros require GNU software to function. So what I am trying to say that if GNU adds enough functionality it should be used as part of the name.
