Equivalent of debian's /etc/email-addresses?

I always get totally confused messing around with MTAs.

Debian has an /etc/email-addresses file with exim that allows you to specify a local user and an address that outbound emails from that user will be rewritten to.

I'm trying to do the same thing with outbound email on postfix, qmail, exim, or any MTA and Gentoo. I'd also like the 'maildir' mailbox format supported for local mail delivery (which I'm having trouble getting exim to do).

It's pretty simple, really... this is all I want:

1) Local mail gets delivered to maildir format normally (i.e. local mail to root goes to root's maildir, or if I'm forwarding root mail to my own in /etc/aliases, it would go to my maildir).

2) Outbound internet mail from me gets rewritten as from me@publicdomain.com.

Can anyone offer some advice? Just regular old ssmtp would be fine, except that local mail doesn't work.

Hmm ok I think I got it. I'm using postfix's sender_canonical file to rewrite my local From address to my public From address and it seems to work okay. I must say, out of the Big Three, postfix, exim, and qmail, I definitely prefer postfix. It seems to have the best documentation and easier syntax.
