unix = yoo-nix
linux = linnuks
xmms = x--m-m-s
gaim = game
gnu = g-n-u
vim = vim
nvi = n-v-i
ssh = s-s-h
gentoo = jen-too
fsck = f-s-c-k
GUI = g-u-i
suse = suzi (yeah, I know it is supposed to be soo-suh)
mysql = my-s-q-l
etc = e-t-c
GNOME = gnome (those little buggers in children's stories)
Ubuntu = Oo-boon-too (have always spoken it that way, as U is pronounced as 'oo' at the start of most words in my native tongue)
postgresql = postgres-q-l
nmap = n-map

As a general rule, I do not try to twist anything into a pronounced word unless it obviously appears to be one.

Wow, and I always just said the letters, and will likely continue to do that.

Actually, everyone does that. Few in their right mind would actually say guh-noo.

Also, it is pronunciation not pronOunciation

Do you really perceive the need to say GNU that often? I think I've actually said it about 3-4 times in my life.

If you've got any friends who use GNU/Linux, or work in a related business, you often have to use it.

Clearly. Which I don't. I very rarely discuss linux with people in person, few people are interested.

to argue about ones taste or smell with another is futile.

Linux is pronounced Li-nooks .. as in the Li from linen and the rest from nook (nook and cranny, etc.)

That is the proper Finnish pronunciation as given by Linus himself, the linnicks thing is the american accent version and of course acceptable :-D

but what I hate is when people say Lie-nucks. :)
