just curious, but is english not your first language? |
Why would you say that? His pronunciations seem perfectly reasonable to me. |

Hmm, much the same as others--
gnome: g'nome
qt : cue tee
MySQL: my sequel
ssh: ess ess aitch
vi: vee eye
fsck: fisk
linux: l-"eye" nucks (long I). Linus pronounces in "leenucks", and pronounces his name "leenus"; common American pronunciation for the similar name is "l-'eye' nucks" (long I), so I do the same for his OS. This way, I'm slightly wrong and slightly right simultaneously. |

okay, 9 pages of punctuation pronunciation (say that 10 times fast!), and not one entry for ? = huh.
also, [] are brackets, but also square brackets, to distinguish them from <>, angle brackets
# = the number sign
| = pipe, but i've also heard pike, and (being a math major) absolute value signs
^ = hat, or my personal favorite, "capital 6," since "carret" is a relatively obscure term.
' = prime
boinc = bo ink (not sure why boink never occured to me...)
vi = vie
linux = linnix (comes from living in the northeast where schwa is pronounced "ii")
gnu = nu - like the animal. i know it's wrong, but i could never get behind the hard g; it just sounds stupid.
SuSE= soo-see - just discovered this was also wrong, apparently, it's soo-say.
xmms = ex-em-es - i drop an m in the interest of not getting tongue-tied |

yeah, thats an annoying one too. all the windows server admins here call it sequel. everyone else i know says s-q-l.
ps: i pronounce linux "lin-ucks", not "lye-nucks". _________________ goodbye fgo. it was nice knowing you. |

It's actually a little different from that (assuming standard German pronounciation). The first syllable is "soo", the second one is not easy to explain without using something like IPA.
The vowel in "se" is pronounced like the last vowel in "mother".
Edit: AFAIK, Torvald pronounces "Linux" as "lee-nooks". |

GNOME - guh NOME
GNU - guh NOO
Vi - vee eye
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 - et cetra init dot dee net dot eeth zero (that is, I don't pronounce slashes in pathnames...anybody else not do this?)
tty - titty
Linux - lynnucks (short i)
Gentoo - djintoo (I'm from the south, and although I pretty much have no accent, I still raise all e's to i's before nasals)
| - or (even when used as a pipe, so I'd say "ell ess or less" for "ls | less")
# - pound, but #! is shebang or hash-bang
! - bang
fsck - pronounced as it's spelled, i.e. with 's' functioning as the nucleus of the syllable instead of a vowel; but sometimes also "fusk".
Qt - cute
X11 - piece of shit
gkrellm - GEE krelm
Debian - DEE bee an (sometimes also DEBB ee an)
/usr - user |

Never heard linux being pronounced as "linix" before.
Myself, and most people I know say "line-ucks". At my old job they said "linn-ucks". _________________ Hysteriagaming.co.uk is now DOT COM! New design, forum, articles, the works! http://www.hysteriagaming.com

I have always wondered how do you pronounce Gentoo?
Is it like Gen(eral)too
or
like Gen(ocide)too?
I have always pronounced it liket he first one but I always hear people pronounce it wrong (or so I would think).
And also like Ubuntu...No idea how to do that one...
(sorry I am in A+...very VERY boring class) |

I actually had to look up how genocide was supposed to be pronounced differently (I use the same sound as in general), but now that I know, I agree with you: I also pronounce Gentoo as in general. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

/dʒɛn'tuː/ is how I've always pronounced it, but according to Wikipedia it should be /ˈdʒɛntu/ (as in gentle). _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln
