my computer also freezes with a blank black screen when exiting the x-server.
this happened after a emerge -uD world some days ago, so I decided to reinstall the complete system, but the problem's still there
i remember that it worked with 2.6.15.1, maybe it has something to do with a new xorg-x11 update?
i'm using the latest ati-drivers, but with the release before it doesn't work, too.
has anyone the same problem?

Yup, i have 2.6.15-archck2 kernel with 8.21.7 ati drivers and it works on modular X.Org 7 :)

glxgears result:
27501 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5500.192 FPS :)

There's no support for that card in fglrx. Use the DRI project drivers instead.

Try removing framebuffer support for ATI in your kernel if it's there.

thats a good point, because somehow the standard vesa framebuffer on 2.6.15.1-kernel is VERY slow, on 2.6.14.* it`s normal
for me the radeonfb worked with my 9700pro, with the X800XT it never worked (computer hangs up right after beginning to boot the kernel)

btw, did anyone get the fglrx_agp module to run? module loading always fails, (i think there`s also an error when compiling the module) so i have to use the nvidia_agp kernel module, but i wonder if performance was better with the internal agp module.

Always worth a try. There are newer debian patched kernels than that too... but I'd use a recent vanilla+some suitable patchset over debian's anyway.

It's the debian I use for developpement, I'd rather keep a stable debian kernel, rather than testing. Anyway, I've got Windows XP to play, I just wanted to know if I did something wrong. Thanx for helping :)

PostPosted: Tue Jan 31, 2006 3:01 am    Post subject: modules_refcount error, or other direct rendering problem Reply with quote

Someone posted a question about a modules_refcount problem earlier and didn't seem to get a response. I think my problem has to do with this error, but I'm not sure.
I'm unable to get direct rendering to work. I have a radeon 9500 on an Nforce2 motherboard. I've compiled agpgart and nvidia-agp as modules, and they load correctly at boot time (building them into the kernel doesn't solve the problem.) I installed x11-drm with video_card="radeon". The ati-drivers package appears to compile correctly, but when I try to modprobe fglrx, I get "Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)." I used ati's utility to generate my xorg.conf, so I believe that's correct - I know dri is set to "on," I have my driver set to "fglrx," and changing to "radeon" doesn't get me direct rendering.

dmesg | grep fglrx gives:
Code:
fglrx: Unknown symbol module_refcount

dmesg | grep drm gives:
Code:
[drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925

glxinfo gives:
Code:

display: :0  screen: 0

server glx version string: 1.2
server glx extensions:

My Xorg.0.log gives kind of a different picture - here are two error sections I pulled from that. I really don't know what to make of these, but I think they're at least a little instructive. The rest of the xorg log looks fine to me.

hmm, as far as i know the fglrx drivers don`t work with dri or drm enabled
i also remember that i had to remove everything related to direct rendering manager (in character devices section) in my kernel to get them work

I do have drm disabled in my kernel. I believe the line of output above is related to x11-drm, rather than the kernel's drm.

Unless there's some way I could have unknowningly overridden the menuconfig option, it's turned off.

hi,
I try to find the answer on this forum but, uh, I stop searching after reading 10 pages...

So, I have a radeaon mobility M9 (ie a R250) with xorg 6.8.2-r6 and a 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 kernel which I compiled with the following option:

Code:
<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
      < >   ATI chipset support
      <*>   SiS chipset support
<*> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
      <*>   ATI Radeon

The string in my xorg.conf are:

Code:
Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "radeon"
        VendorName  "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName   "Radeon R250 Lf [Radeon Mobility 9000 M9]"

and when I run glxinfo, I have this:

Code:
direct rendering: Yes
...
OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20040929 AGP 4x x86 TCL

uh, is it normal it's not R250 ? 8O

other thing: will I improve my 3D/2D performance if I use x11-drm? or by compiling my option as modules? (I read everybody compile them as modules...)

thanks

U can try and look at your mtrr
Code:
#cat /proc/mtrr

if you get like 1 Tb then this is your problem , it is somthing to do with your BIOS
delivering the corect information about the hardware
I found it here on the ubuntu forum
but can also found here as well
after strageling for about 4 months this was the solution :
a simple script
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Combine all main memory mtrr ranges into a single register
echo "disable=0" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=1" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=2" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=3" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=4" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=5" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=6" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0 size=0x40000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr #NOTE: Use 0x40000000 if you have 1GB of system memory, 0x80000000 if you have 2GB, 0x20000000 if you have 512Mb, 0x10000000 if you have 256Mb, and 0x08000000 if you have 128Mb, etc.
exit

i saved it under /etc/init.d/fix_mtrr
and rc-update to boot
it worked like magic

PostPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2006 9:17 pm    Post subject: All-black screen in some situations Reply with quote

Does an all-black screen in certain situations tend to mean anything?
I've always run nvidia cards, but before I bought a new one to play Civ 4, I thought I'd try with a friends Radeon 9700 which he wasn't using. I got it up and running, Enemy Territory runs perfect, so 3D acceleration must be working. Civ 4 starts fine (Cedega 5.0.2, worked with my old GF3, although slow), but when I get to the map screen, everything is black. I can click around with the mouse, and hear the menus go off, but it's all black.
Ideas?

Also: The entire X server seems to hang when logging out, but only some times.

Can anyone suggest a more appropriate place for me to post the problem I listed above? I tried here because it seems like a radeon problem, but maybe kernel and hardware? Any insight is much appreciated.

I want to upgrade my PC and I dont know if you should buy a ATI or Nvidia graphics card.

Are the newest ATI cards (1800 and 1900 series) supported in linux ?

Or should I buy a Nvidia card ?

Buy an NVIDIA card.

You will save yourself all kinds of heartache and pain. For supporting data, see the first 35 pages of this thread.

Believe me, I would if I could <_< Convincing my dad that I need a different video card for some obscure (to home users, anyway) operating system, when the radeon works flawlessly on the preinstalled windows XP, would be an uphill battle in torrential rainfall toward an army with machine guns.

And no. I'm not reading through 35 pages.

PROBLEM
-------------

DRM supposedly works (well, that's what Cedega said), but the 3D acceleration itself does not. I have a Radeon 9200, with both AGP and DRM enabled as modules in the kernel. Kernel is gentoo-sources x86 2.6.15, X version is 6.8.2. I had the binary driver installed before, but emerge -C'd it because it was screwing up my screen after switching back and forth between the console and X screen.

Code:
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

I had this problem as well a few days ago. It was actually quite easy to solve
at least on my system. I'm using mesa-cvs, but in
/usr/lib/opengl/mesa-cvs
was no extensions folder and altough no libglx.so. So I just created a symlink
from the mesa-cvs dir:
ln -s ../xorg-x11/extensions extensions

So, if you're using the ati driver just go into the ati dir instead of the mesa-cvs.

Hope it helps :)

Also can't seam to get DRI to work with my old Radeon 7500 card

Got DRI disabled in the kernel and followed the ATI guide to the letter, but no go.

I checked out the FAQ and I ended up in the section "Nothing helps" ;-)

Would love to get it working, if for no other reason then the fact that I dislike having something that doesn't work as it should. (I'd also like to whip out my copy of neverwinternights and start playing again, so ...)

I cant load my fglrx modul. agpgart is compiled as module and loads without a problem (agpgart and sis_agp). dmesg gives me:
Quote:

I use ati-drivers 8.21.7 and vanilla-sources 2.6.16_rc2.

(I managed to load fglrx with ati-driver 8.14.x but my X-server froze everytime i shutdown or ran fglrxinfo)

Good suggestion, but not everyone has the money to get another graphics card.

To holybreath: Save your breath. My post was in reply to mephist0's question about a hardware upgrade.. jerk.

For anyone who cares (Ghosa?), the problem I reported earlier with ati drivers not working (unable to load fglrx, unknown symbol module_refcount, no direct rendering) resolved itself when I upgraded my kernel. I was using gentoo-2.6.14-r5, I'm now using gentoo-2.6.15-r1, with ati-drivers version 8.21.7, with an ati radeon 9500. I have no idea how it fixed itself, but I have hardware rendering and I'm happy.

Now if I could only get GRUB to see the new kernel image...
