It does

hmm, well, i went back and redid the steps to get the driver working, and it works now, maybe something was wrong with my system that day,, as i couldnt compile the module...

Code:
# fglrxinfo
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X700 PRO Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5519 (X4.3.0-8.20.8)

# glxgears
26202 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5240.400 FPS
26204 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5240.800 FPS
26202 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5240.400 FPS

thanks for proving me wrong =p cause i wouldnt have tried to get the drivers working again

@quellthrix

i did nothing special, i just followed the gentoo wiki and that was it....

Ebuilds anyone? :) I tried installing those by copying 8.20.8 ebuild and it didn't compile.

I installed them without the ebuild, but they are making the whole system crashing badly....

I started glxgears... ctrl-c to close and then freeze, does this everytimes and also hangs (but not freeze) with glxinfo.

I recently changed my laptop, and went from a 9100igp to a x600 m, so I changed radeon driver to fglrx driver. reading through the driver release notes, I encountered this:
Quote:
Attempting to install the driver on distributions that have updated certain 3D components outside of the stock XOrg 6.8.2 may result in the driver not initializing 3D applications properly. Further details can be found in topic number 737-20868

still, I'm using modular xorg (7.0), and it works. Out of curiosity, I just want to investigate, I just can't seem to find any info regarding this "topic number"... any ideas?

apart from that I'm rather satisfied with the driver (8.20 currently) as STR and hibernate work like a charm, but I encounter crashes on logout when going back to xdm (blackiness, and urgent need of power button), and random graphical corruption/slowdown in doom3-based engines (d3/q4). It's rather weird as I could play for hours and be fine, or play 5 min on the very same places and encounter graphical glitches and slowness in specific places.

They have changed driver package a little bit, but I managed to hack together an ebuild (made some modifications to 8.20.8 ebuild). If you really want to test it, download it from here. But I think it is better to wait official ebuild, especially because I don't see any speed / stability improvements. In fact there is at least one new bug (can't switch to VT anymore).

And please no support requests

ATI said there is opengl2 support, but they didn't say anything about speed or stability ;)

EDIT:
Thx for the ebuild, works well :)

damit! fucking ATI! WHY OH WHY can they not fix the problem with running two X servers?

Changelog (v8.21.7):

Quote:

Known Issues
* Running two X servers simultaneously results in the system failing to respond. Further details can be found in topic number 737-220

I cannot run linux at all on my computer until they fix this problem... I mean, how hard can it be?!

Do ATi release monthly?

Why run two X Servers?

I take it EXA and XComposite are still unsupported? I ask because ATi refer to the 2-D acceleration as "Full-featured and optimized" here: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=23#2d.

Also, is XComposite officially stable yet?

Thanks,

Erlend

no new features except opengl2, performance is still the same, at least I didn't notice any difference yet, even if I'm doing +100fps on glxgears :)
No Exa and same thing for xcomposite, no support yet :(
I think they have also problems with 2.6.15 kernels...

Anyway if you install them using the same patch that fix issues with 2.6.15 kernels used by the ebuild for 8.20.8 drivers, will fix this problem. The ebuild from nullkey works pretty well for me and includes this patch.

Oh yeah, I read about this on www.rage3d.com/board. It's a bit of a shame, but I suppose it has been the holidays and I suspect they have to meet a 1 or 2 month release schedule (notice they always release at the same time as the Windows XP drivers).

that's part of the "catalyst program" they put in place back when their windows drivers were reputed to be much failures against nvidia ones. now this seems to apply to linux ones too (being failures vs nv, and release rhythms ;) talk about history repeating. hopefully this will improve over time as it did under windows)

Well I have 2 graphic cards, which both are ATI and I have 4 screens, so I must run 2 x-servers. I don't now another solution to my problem.
Do you? :)

first off, i'd like to apologize for posting this, im sure its posted elsewhere, but after 10 pages of this thread, i figured i wasnt going to find it.

anyway, i've installed a radeon 9800 pro on my machine running the 2.6.14-r5 kernel more or less stalk install of gentoo from the current minimal live cd available for download.

X starts fine, but i get the following error whenever i try to run any graphic intensive things:
Code:
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

fglrxinfo returns:
Code:

Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual!

fglrx is loading, i can see it under lsmod.

My motherboard is a sis, and im not sure what agp module to load with it,(couldnt find sis-agp)

Im pretty new to linux, so please excuse me if im missing a piece of vital information, if anyone has any idea's, it would be greatly appriciated.

You could post the information from /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Also, are you running on AMD64 or x86?

its an x86 system, intel P4 if that helps.

Any luck with getting the latest ati-drivers (8.21.7) with the latest kernel (2.6.15-r1) working?

I also have a glx problem. I noticed it gave this message in the X.org log
Code:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module glx
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)

I have a triple monitor ((2)ati 9800 pro, (1)s3virge) setup and my setup stopped working for me after updating to kde-base/kde-3.4.3-r1.
I'm not shure that's the problem. There where other things that were emerged, but I don't think they had anything todo with X11. I was running kernel 2.6.14-r2 at the time and the latest "stable" ati-drivers (8.14.13-r3).

I have followed the procedure described on the wiki and tried every problem resolution method describe there.

Switching back to to kernel 2.6.14-r2 with the latest drivers also didn't work.

Hi all, sorry for disturbing you, but I've got a problem I can't solve, and maybe you could help me :)

I've tried to install the ATI radeon drivers, on a debian sarge. I've tried by using the rpm from the official ATI website, and I've tried by using the Flavio Stanchina method too ( http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html ). The result is always the same : my computer freezes when my Xserver start. No way to use ctrl+ALT+F1 or ctrl+ALT+del, I can just reboot manually.

My kernel version is 2.6.8, my Xfree server version is 4.3, my graphic card is a Radeon 9800 Pro.

Result for command "modprobe -v fglrx" :
Code:
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8/misc/fglrx.ko

Result for "dmesg" :
http://gang.1formatik.com/daoc/ATI/dmesg.txt

result for "lsmod" :
http://gang.1formatik.com/daoc/ATI/lsmod.txt

The XFree86 log :
http://gang.1formatik.com/daoc/ATI/XFree86.0.log
(it really ends like that, I didn't cut the log)

My XFree86 config file :
http://gang.1formatik.com/daoc/ATI/XF86Config-4

And, to finish, my kernel configuration file :
http://gang.1formatik.com/daoc/ATI/config-2.6.8

I just can't figure out where the problem is. Thanx for your help :)

Why not give a newer kernel than that antiquated (like, over a year old) one a shot?

because it's a debian patched one. Do you think I should upgrade my kernel ? No problems in my logs and config files ?

hmm.. 8.21.7 works smoothly for me @ kernel 2.6.15-r1, but ati-drivers-extra 8.21.7 fails to emerge with error
Code:
!!! ERROR: x11-apps/ati-drivers-extra-8.21.7 failed.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 31, Exitcode 1
!!! unpack failed

Always worth a try. There are newer debian patched kernels than that too... but I'd use a recent vanilla+some suitable patchset over debian's anyway.
