I am having trouble getting applications to start when I startx. I do not use KDE or Gnome, but simply Enlightenment by itself.
(OK, OK, so I'm into the Old School way. I just don't care for the baggage you get with KDE or Gnome. Not to mention that Enlightenment will evolve into a desktop shell with v0.17) 
My ~/.xsession looks like:

/usr/bin/gkrellm &
/usr/bin/xmms &
# Enlightenment inserted Execution string here
exec /usr/bin/enlightenment

What happens is Enlightenment starts, but will never COMPLETE starting up, unitl I kill the afore mentioned apps. Am I starting stuff incorrectly?

it could be that one of the applications is hanging.
I use flux box and my first command in .xinitrc is
fluxbox &
[list of commands to run eg. xterm]
maybe you should try starting 'e' first and then the rest? |

Enlightenment has this really handy thing called "Remember." For example, I want gkrellm to start everytime I start up Enlightenment, so I do the following: - Hold the ALT button and right click.
- Scroll down to "Remember."
- Check off the "Restart application on login" checkbox (it isn't really a check box is it? Don't know what else to call it...)
Get out of enlightenment, and try it again. Hope that helps. By the way enlightenment rocks.

I know it sounds wonky but just remove "exec" from e's startup line, that solved the problem for me.
Also, if you plan to run Eterms and want transparency to work properly be sure to run Esetroot with *any* graphic right before.

That single line of text represents one of my largest frustrations in moving from E to KDE (Which I did about 6 months ago). If KDE had a remember function I would be the happiest man on the planet.
I use it to make all of my windows appear in predetermined places - like mozilla ALWAYS appearing on desktop 2 in a certain place and at a certain size and eterms always appearing on desktop 1 in a certain place at a certain size.
Once you get used to this your productivity soars - I cringe everytime I have to waste time resizing my eterm after I open it in KDE when it could just open at the size that I want.
Ok ok, I'lll stop ranting now!

Thanks for all the input,everybody. I'll check out the remember feature. I'll also try removing the exec for enlightenment in the .xsession.
friedmud, I believe you can use E with KDE in place of KWM. I'm sure there may be a few specific features that won't work, but it may be worth a try.

True - very true - but the reason I moved away from E in the first place was that it had some processes that were producing "glitches" in my 3d games. Even on a 1.2GHz Athlon with a Geforce3 - every second or so my graphics would "Tick" - I don't know how else to describe it - but it doesn't happen in any other WM.
Plus I like KWM for most stuff - like I said the Remember function is the only one that I truly miss.

can't you just use the 'remeber this session' or something like that at the end of your kde session? It used to work just fine for me. In fact, it would even open my browser to the correct web page. |
