I wish I had good news for you, but I haven't found anyone who has gotten the .6629 driver working on any card, GeForce 2 or older (that includes GeForce 4 MX's - which are really GeForce 2's).
There was quite a discussion on nVidia's Linux discussion forum at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40143
but nobody had any answers. Consensus is that older cards just don't work with the new driver.
I'm going to try an older version. Does anyone know the last driver to work with a TNT 2? |

It might also be worth mentioning that I have tried the nvidia driver with both a 2.4.26-r13 and a 2.6.9-r9 kernel.
No luck. |

Well, the entire error should be recorded in your "/var/log/xorg.[hit TAB here]" file.
I finally got an NVIDIA driver working by removing all the drivers and modules I had previously tried (the nVidia installer for 6111 was trying to convince me that I was using the wrong kernel sources toward the end), and just did an emerge of "nvidia-glx" and nothing else.
Seriously, it didn't work when I merged "nvidia-kernel," or even both the "glx" and the "kernel," but only when I did the "glx" driver alone.
Hope this helps someone. |

Doesn't "nvidia-glx" depend on "nvidia-kernel"? I dont know how to install "nvidia-glx" without "nvidia-kernel".
Let me know please... |

The "nvidia-kernel" module does in fact get installed during the merge of the "nvidia-glx" package. I guess all I mean to say, is that it never worked when I tried to do them seperately, but for some reason, it worked when I merged the "nvidia-glx" package, which installed both for me.
Someday I'll understand it.
I got Quake 3 and UT2004 running in Gentoo, just to show my co-workers that it could be done. I never had any problems at all getting the nvidia drivers working in Fedora, but Gentoo really makes you understand what you are doing. That's why I like it, I guess. Takes me back to the old days when you had to struggle to get a computer working - and the sense of accomplishment that goes with it. |
