Mozilla is my browser, but it is based on netscape, so maybe opera is for you (personally i don't like the ads). Take a look at dillo if you only have very minimal browsing needs. And there is always skipstone, but I have not tried that.
Just make sure you 'setterm -blength 0' before/if you emerge mozilla. Otherwise you'll have a machine that goes beep crazy, letting rip every time it changes directory during the compile. |

It is kind of outdated. I personally like Galeon. _________________ - Kyle Manna

Opera is great except for the ads. It's fast, it has an excellent full-screen mode and I find that the tabbed browsing works better than in Mozilla.
I'm using Mozilla for the moment cause I just installed gentoo for the first time, but I will probably switch back to opera once the ebuild is up to date. I think the newest ebuild is for TP1 or TP2, but beta 2 is out now and it's much better.

Why don't you like Galeon? I'm just curious... after using Galeon I'm having a hard time using anything else. |

Mozilla here personally.
At work I have to use Windows and it is still on my fiance's machine - so I like the ability to use the exact same interface everywhere.
Other than that - I like it's speed and tabbed browsing.
Most of all though I like the project itself. The mozilla project is open-source at its finest. It had its rough times but is now working on 1.0 and it should be out soon. There is a real community of people that work on this project - and that is part of the reason I use Linux (and I LOVE the Gentoo community too).
Go to the site - read through the docs and the weekly updates (there should be a new one out today or last night BTW). And you will see that there are more reasons to use mozilla than "just because"

Just a noise issue I have had in the past... woke me up in the middle of the night once and kept me awake for what seemed like a long time.
They might have stopped it now, but whenever I emerge mozilla I input that line. I'd like to know if it still beeps actually. Does it?
I could spend the rest of my life inputting that text, when they fixed it 'eons' ago. Reminds me of rats and shuttle boxes...
I have stopped and redone emerges before, worked fine. |

SCREW THAT!
I yanked that damned thing out of this new case within the first ten minutes of having it! It is the ONLY way to get rid of beeps PERMANENTLY!

Come'on man, you just used my arguments pro Opera .
And it's not that I don't like mozilla, on the contrary (it has beter default font selections), but opera is just soooooooo much faster. AND lighter on the system.

The first browser I installed was Galeon (w/Mozilla .9.9). I had problems configuring windows, so I just gave up and installed Mozilla
(I had been using it for quite some time under Win2K). After seeing your post, I thought I'd give Galeon another go. I emerged v. 1.2.1.
I had been unable to get windows to open with the menu bar within the desktop. After using it for about 20 minutes, I have decided
I do not care for its preferences system, though I may get use to it. Also, creating a new tab is not as easy as in Mozilla. With Moz,
I just right click on the tab area to create a new one. Minor stuff so far, but still annoying to me. I'll use it some more to see if anything
else feels wrong. I'm sure some of it is just because I've not used it for long.
One feature I wish someone would implement is an alt-<some key> (or similar) feature which puts the cursor into the URL line. That's
the only thing Microsoft has ever produced that I liked.
EDIT: Don't like that it opens the page I was viewing when I closed Galeon. |

a few things:
pablored: Mozilla is not based on Netscape, it's the other way around. Netscape was just a different development branch off Mozilla until AOL got it's hands on Netscape.
Uranus: I don't think your png libraries are compiled and installed or there are differences in the versions that you have installed and the one that is required. (Don't ask me how to do that...I just think that's the problem)
TheMole: Mozilla is a lot faster as of latest release.
I personally like Mozilla, it's what Netscape should have been. But oh well... _________________ Stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe. |

Strange, this for me was one of the features of Galeon I really liked. I found the preferences system more intuitive and user friendly. Again, this is very subjective. Perhaps you may grow to like it
kanuslupus wrote: | Also, creating a new tab is not as easy as in Mozilla. With Moz,

Ctrl+t opens a tab. You can also configure opening links as tabbed windows much like Mozilla.

I remember when I first used Fluxbox. I didn't like it but I couldn't tell how much of it was due to my conditioning from using other WMs. So I decided to stick it out. After a week I liked it so much it became my main WM. Maybe I was just brainwashed by some subtle messages the Fluxbox coders embedded
kanuslupus wrote: | One feature I wish someone would implement is an alt-<some key> (or similar) feature which puts the cursor into the URL line. |
With Galeon you use ctrl-l (thats a lowercase L). I believe Mozilla/Netscape is the same. In Galeon you can also use ctr-o to open a box for you to type your URL, just like IE.

You can change that feature in the preferences.
You might want to look into Galeon's "Smart Bookmarks". They are very cool. Also the UI in Galeon is much more responsive then Mozilla/Netscape (how noticible this is depends on your hardware). |

mozilla is what I use most of the time.
galeon is really a better version of mozilla, but it chaps my buns to have to merge most of gnome just to get a browser, so I dropped it.
opera is great. I actually payed the bucks to register.
You can't go wrong with any of these three.
From time to time I use dillo for basic browsing, It's lightning fast, but very limited (no frames support, no downloads). _________________ Collins Richey - Denver Area

Actually, this was more of a WM issue, I just didn't realize it. What was happening, is the title bar for Galeon was off screen when it launched. This was the only app doing this
at the time, so I thought it was a Galeon problem.

I'll probably be fine with it once I remember where all the settings are.

I figured there was a way, I just happened to like Mozilla's right click/new tab feature. I usually end up likeing keboard shortcuts once I find them.

Cool... I figured I would find out the trick with this statement .

Will look, hadn't seemed obvious yet.

Will check this out as well. Generally I find "smart" software features more annoying than helpful. As for speed, I thought Mozilla seemed faster, but that was probably because I
was use to it. For my hardware (Slot A Athlon 750), I'd have to guess they are about the same.
Most of my "complaints" come from making me change my old ways . In the end, I would have to say that I don't see any reason to use one over the other. Not yet anyway.
I've used it since I made my first post, and will continue to until I find a reason to stop.
Thanks for the tips. |

Think I've found the setting to NOT display last viewed page on startup. Unfortunately it isn't working. I had already selected
'Show blank page' for both On Startup & On New Page. Perhaps 'Always save session at exit' is overriding those settings.
Does anyone know what 'Always save session at exit' is supposed to do then? I was thinking it was supposed to save
window dimensions, that sort of thing. |

I am not sure why anyone using KDE would not enjoy Konqueror.
Mozilla/Netscape - Slow to load, render poorly.
Galeon - Last time I used it, it looked like pong.
Opera - Works well but Konqueror is free.
Konqueror looks great. Pages render well (and fonts look good). Its quick and handles alot of file type correctly. Can use Netscape pluggins, java, shockwave, etc.
Also doubles as a file browser. It is a very fuctional piece of software.

Well, this here thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=390&highlight=konquerer convinced me to not use KDE. That and the fact that everything is 'K' something.
Not my cup of tea. Also, I've read KDE 3 is not that fast (might be in thread mentioned above).
seaweed wrote: | Mozilla/Netscape - Slow to load, render poorly.

Mozilla might load a little slowly, nothing major to me. I have no rendering problems.
Using Galeon v1.2.1 and previous (Moz. .9.9 based?) I have very similar experiences as with Mozilla. That is, a little load time, but quick rendering.
Used one of the earliest MS Windows versions of Opera and didn't think much of it. I won't use adware, and like you said, its not free. Don't see any reason to pay for a web
browser until they aren't free. In that case, I'd probably try Opera again.
seaweed wrote: | Konqueror looks great. Pages render well (and fonts look good). Its quick and handles alot of file type correctly. Can use Netscape pluggins, java, shockwave, etc. |
Can't comment on Konq, never used it. I have no real issues with fonts or rendering with Mozilla or Galeon. I suspect KDE/Konq may set up TTF automaticaly where other WMs
may require manual configuration.
seaweed wrote: | Also doubles as a file browser. It is a very fuctional piece of software. |
For me, thats a reason to not use it. I want my browser for the internet, not files. I prefer other filemanagers. Sounds like KDE is trying to emulate MS Windows so migrating users
might feel more comfortable?
Nice news story. |
