Hi SPARC People!

First of all, let me apologize for the huge post, but there's no way to attach files to a post, and I currently don't have web space available.

Also, to whoever helps me resolve these issues, I will be sending US$20 via Paypal. Or, if you can only help me with one problem, it will be $15 for the pci_iommu stuff, and $5 for the networking stuff. Or hell, you could ssh into a livecd if you want and build it from scratch. I don't care. As long as you get it to work.

Please note that this is my first SPARC-based gentoo experience, so please be gentle.

I have a SunFire V100. It doesn't love me so much. Mainly there's two problems:

1) after a bit of time (2 - 20 minutes), I get the following error, over and over, and I can't do anything but watch it go by:

Code:
pci_iommu: alloc_streaming_cluster of npages(1) failed!

I have no idea what is going on. I've traced it to:

Code:
/usr/src/linux/arch/sparc64/kernel/pci_iommu.c

...but I am not a coder.

2) Networking doesn't work. I have eth0 and eth1, but they show up with MACs of all zeroes. I know I have the "bad" version of these NICs (multiple problems reported elsewhere on the net), so I have to use the tulip drivers, but I don't know how to make them work. I thought I built it into the kernel, but I guess not. All I know is that "modprobe tulip" doesn't work.

Here's what I get when I start up (the bad: scheduling while atomic! stuff kinda worries me):

Code:
lom>reset
LOM event: +9d+19h20m22s host reset
lom>console

Any Ideas? Does anyone have a kernel .config that'll work on this machine? 2.6.7 isn't required, but 2.6 branch would be nice. I just want to install MySQL on this box; it doesn't need anything fancy.

Just to be thorough, here is my disk layout:

Code:
db-pri root # fdisk /dev/hda

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hda (Sun disk label): 16 heads, 255 sectors, 19156 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4080 * 512 bytes

Device Flag    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   r         0     18627  37999080   83  Linux native
/dev/hda2  u      18627     19156   1079160   82  Linux swap
/dev/hda3             0     19156  39078240    5  Whole disk

Command (m for help): q

db-pri root #

I know this isn't the recommended layout, but I needed it done quick.

And, lastly, here is my config straight from /usr/src/linux/.config:

First of all, did you emerged the "development-sources" to get the kernel-2.6? This is the recommended ebuild for sparc-platform with 2.6.
Code:

# General setup
#
CONFIG_PREEMPT=y

Disable this to get rid of your "...atomic..." and possibly other strange problems.

Code:

# CONFIG_PCI is not set
# CONFIG_PCI_DOMAINS is not set

Your syslog shows some pci activities, however did you really not enabled this? I'm not familiar with SunFire but my SunBlade1000 has several (onboard) components connected via pci.

Code:

Blade1000 ~ # uname -a
Linux Blade1000 2.6.7 #2 Tue Sep 7 09:29:17 CEST 2004 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc III (Cheetah) GNU/Linux
Blade1000 ~ # lspci
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Schizo PCI Bus Module
0000:00:01.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5700 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 12)
0000:00:04.0 SCSI storage controller: QLogic Corp. QLA2200 (rev 05)
0001:00:00.0 Host bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Schizo PCI Bus Module
0001:00:05.0 Bridge: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. RIO EBUS (rev 01)
0001:00:05.1 Ethernet controller: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. RIO GEM (rev 01)
0001:00:05.2 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. RIO 1394 (rev 01)
0001:00:05.3 USB Controller: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. RIO USB (rev 01)
0001:00:06.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 37)
0001:00:06.1 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 37)

So you should probably activate this feature too, in addition "pci_iommu.c" is pci related stuff.

Let us see, which problem then is still there...
Bye,
Peter.

gimme root :)

for the NIC, try use tulip drv instead of davicom and please note that eth0 == net1 and eth1 == net0 (well this could happen on some machines)

I have x1 runnig gentoo an v100 is almost identical to x1 IMO

If you want I can send you my .config for 2.4.x kernel

Hello again.

Yes, I emerge'd development-sources to get 2.6.7.

OK, what follows is my new /usr/src/linux/.config. I compiled it, and now when I boot, it redraws the screen as blank and just sits there, with the cursor in the top left corner, just blinking with no text. :(

xming: If you could send me your 2.4 config, that'd be most helpful. My email is cghota@midsouth.ualr.edu. Thanks.

Yeah, I finally bit the bullet and recompiled with vanilla-sources (2.4.27).

But now I'm having a new problem:

One quick note on the networking modules

To be able to modprobe the network devices correctly, you will have to build both the proper NIC drivers and the Tulip drivers as modules rather than as part of the kernel, so that you can use modprobe to remove and insert them.

Eventually you will want to use an alias in the modules.d/whatever file to make the correct modules automatically load.
