Hey everyone, I am following the install guide for postfix, but as soon as I try to
emerge postfix mutt
I get this error
!!! Error: the virtual/mta package conflicts with this package and both can't be installed on the same system together.
So, I was going to unmerge mta, and it tells me this:
>>> These are the packages that I would unmerge:
net-mail/ssmtp
selected: 2.38.14-r1
protected: none
omitted: none
>>> Packages in red are slated for removal.
>>> Packages in green will not be removed.
Should I just unmerge this ? and emerge postfix?

Oh well, I dont need to know about ssmtp, I knew just
unmerging would work.. I just wanted to know the difference btw
the two.. oh well..

ssmtp is a very simple, very cut-down mail transport agent. It's good for sending email from a script if that's all you want to do, but that's pretty much it. Postfix is a fully SMPT server implementation; although very powerful it is reasonably simple to set up.

Next time I might try out ssmtp..

| I can't send email from my newly installed 1.4 Gentoo. I too tried following the desktop install doc and stumbled on conflict when trying to install postfix. If all I want to do is send email from kmail on my desktop what do I want as MTA, Sendmail, postfix or ssmtp. ssmtp is installed by default, but doesn't seem to want to work with kmail. Any ideas? |
