Code:

usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: cd: /var/tmp/portage/libgd-2.0.1/work/gd-2.0.1: No such file or directory
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: /usr/portage/media-libs/libgd/files/gd-2.0.1.patch: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `Makefile': No such file or directory
sed: can't read Makefile.orig: No such file or directory
>>> Source unpacked.
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 2, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

I went into /var/tmp/portage/libgd-2.0.1/work/ and all that was in there was an empty.

The patch isn't even in the files directory so the ebuild is just broken. Maybe wait / fix it. Stable version is 1.83 or something.

When building with gd support, 4.3.0 (according to php bug team) will include it's own bundled version. You no longer need to install or worry about compatability with existing installations. Just set --with-gd (and NO PATH!!) and it should build without issue.
