Hi,
Just curious as to what others do to maintain their system, i.e. keep it running in top condition. I've had Gentoo 1.4 running on here for just over 2 months now, and it seems to be running slower than when I first installed it.
Is there anything that you should do periodically like defragment in windoze? (I know this is not necessary in Linux).
Thanks,

Defragmentation isn't a big concern. See here.
Just keep your packages up to date with emerge.
Not much to maintaining a single user Linux system (that I'm aware) of. Just stay up to date on security, patches, and stuff (emerge). Clean out /var/logs every once in a while. Check for evil hackers... *shrugs*
I think it's your imagination telling you it's running slower... I'd swear my system runs faster every day than the day before... |

yeah, it's probably just your imagination ...it should work the same as before
a question: did you install any new software or hardware or even (re)compiled your kernel during thesee 2 months? _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

Hi,
Yep. I have emerged a bunch of new software - dvd stuff, cd recording stuff e.t.c - and I have re-compiled kernel a few times. Can this slow it down?
Thanks,

The kernel can have a big impact on the performance on the entire system. If you've been using the same options each time and compiling it for your architecture though I wouldn't think that it would be the problem. |
