vmware simulates an entire PC -- effectively the same one regardless of actual hardware -- and that pc is 32-bit. So what you'll need is the 32-bit CD even though your actual computer is 64.
It's not really that bad. As things stand the only real benefit you might get from 64-bit is speed in some applications, and that's counterbalanced by some things (video playback and browser plugins are the obvious examples) being harder to get working than under 32-bit.
If you eventually decide to put gentoo on your main computer, you'll have to decide whether to run the 32-bit or 64-bit version (amd64 can handle both). |

Sorry TNorthover, that's not true.
VMware does indeed simulate a pc, but v5.5 has a direct connection to the processor. In v5.5, I was able to run gentoo for amd64 on winXP32, as the topic starter has tried. I think I still have that vm in my dualboot-XP(32).
Topic starter: I don't know if all 5.5-xxxxx versions support 32bit host/64bit guest OS, but the version I used (5.5-15andthensome or something) never had any trouble with it. Also, you might want to check out this site.
note: if you want to test gentoo in ways of what does (not) work, you're fine with vmware. Just don't let the lower performance (which I experienced in vmware) stop you from using gentoo as your main OS. _________________ d|>_<|b |

Hmm, I didn't know it could emulate amd64, sorry for the misinformation. It appears to require certain revisions of the amd64 core though, that could be something to check. |

please tell me, when u start to setup gentoo linux 64x on vmware,

when i chose any 64bit linux in vmware, vmare send a warning that : 64bit guest os are not supported by this host, and
will not run.
then when i try to install gentoo i have seen this message :
loading gentoo.................
loading gentoo.igz........................
.............................................................
..........................................
ready.
your cpu does not support long mode, use a 32bit distribution
please tell me that what kind of linux u chose ?
thanx again. |

Have you tried to run the VMware test program to see if you have the right CPU (revision) to run a 64bit host?
www.vmware.com wrote: | Workstation 5.5 introduces support for virtual machines with 64-bit guest operating systems, running on host machines with the following processors: - AMD Athlon 64, revision D or later;
- AMD Opteron, revision E or later;
- AMD Turion 64, revision E or later,
- AMD Sempron, 64-bit-capable revision D or later (experimental support);
- Intel® EM64T VT-capable processors (experimental support).

Not true, as of v5.5, you can run 32/64bit host/guest in any combination if you have a supported CPU. _________________ d|>_<|b |

64 guest OS does not work with my Athlon 64 revision D.
It seems it doesn't work with 13nm processors. |
