I know of a program for Windows that can convert MIDI files into wave files using soundfonts. Although we couldn't use it, as it's not a Linux program, and it's Shareware, there may be a similiar alternative for Linux.

Try timidity, its a standard gentoo ebuild, with a standard set of sound fonts so it will produce the same output on everyone's machine. Further, you can set it up like a midi player direct to your card, or even have gentoo create a virtual midi device, so sound that a regular midi player would play goes through timidity to your sound card.
I used a Sb Live for awhile, and I can say that Timidity blew it away in terms of quality. The Sb Live sounded like a sound card, and timidty sounded like a midi keyboard.
I've yet to see a good MIDI+Live package for Linux (like Cakewalk Guitar Studio or the many other Win/mac apps), however, with Jack, you should be able to link your favorite midi, mod, d2d programs together and feed them all into ardour on different tracks. Not easy to set up or synchronize though. _________________ Unix/Linux Consulting & Hosting

My avatar says:
"You can safely add me to that list"
But I am a beginner at the cello, so I wouldn't really claim I am a cellist. However, I like gentoo linux too much to use windows for my recording ambitions. Just today I am searching for a decent USB audio interface with microphone preamp. |

also the pro tools web site says nothing about linux |
Ahhh... but it does....
I'll get the link from my friend... he did several hours of digging on the digidesign website and found info regarding pro tools and linux buried... deep..... |

well, after a bit more of a year dormant, i give a bump to this thread
i've been using ardour and supercollider3 since a couple of years in ccrma, now i decided to move to gentoo. teh level of community is amazing. Thanks to the nice support i've been able to write .ebuilds for two apps that i'm using that werent on portage, stk and chuck (search on the bugs for the commits).
I just bought a presonus firepod that i'm hoping soon be able to play as soon the freebob code is commited to jack (supposedly this is going to happen before 1.0 sees the light). Anyhow if the wait gets long i might decide to try out the patches that lie around for debianers |
