As far as the problem with domains is concerned: You could have the domain forwarded with www.dyndns.com or something like it. I use it for making my ugly school-related url's look pretty. They also support both static and dynamic IPs and maintain some pretty helpful documentation on how to set things up. How about gentoo.is.dreaming.org?
I am only a novice musician, but I would be willing to put together some music videos and work on other visual related aspects of the project (flash, photo, design, etc.). _________________ evolve or die |

I'm in! my original music is best described as placing hard rock, funk, and goa-psy trance into a blender. i've always used windows, but i'm trying to escape. Audacity is nice, but just doesn't have the power of soundforge. btw, try http://www.bright.net/~dlphilp/linuxsound/one-page.html _________________ "Speak in extremes, it'll save you time."

Sorry I've been away.
This might sound bad to some of you
but the server is freebsd.
Sorry.
As long as the music is produced with a Gentoo station.
I got the redirect from afraid.org to work again.
I need a python or pearl script to update my dynamic I.P. on the DNS server.
Anyone?
I did not enquire about bandwidth with my ISP.
How much do we plan on using?
Mp3 files would be a good thing for starters.
We can move up to bigger and better things after we have a system going.
I enquired with another ISP and he wants to charge me $300/month
for 100G of transfer.
I will start creating accounts.
You will FTP or ssl to my machine.
Send your name and info to studiozodiak@yahoo.ca
As for a mail server, I would like to but It would take me a long time because I've never done it.
Any help would be apreciated.

Would Ogg Vorbis be all right, and if not, do you want to set any particulars on MP3 settings?
For instance, when I do 128 abr MP3s with LAME, I use the following options:
| Code: | --vbr-new --nspsytune --vbr-mtrh -V1 -mj -h --lowpass 19.5 --athtype 3
--ns-sfb21 2 --abr 128 |
and that sounds almost as good as a 128kbps abr Vorbis file. |

Ok,
My ISP seems to have blocked all the ports or maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I am really getting frustrated.
I don't think I'm the one to be trying set up this server caus I ain't getting nowhere with this dang thing.
But I have been trying.
If anyone has a server up and ready, it might be better.
In the mean time I'll keep on trying.
Sorry folks.

Hey, I'm back.
The production of Oliver! at my school went really well, and I've recoevered from lack of sleep over 2 weeks, and the cast party.
Ogg Vorbis would definitely be the format to use for exchanging ideas. Recording of final tracks should be done using WAV, if at all possible
What software is everybody using? Personally, I'm having good results with Audacity. I tried Adour, and it seemed pretty nice, except that it seems to crash on me every 45 seconds or so. Admittedly, my portage tree is about 3 weeks old.
I propose that we try and get another IRC meeting set, this Sunday at the same time. |

** Sign Up Here **
OK then. We can use my server. Let's keep it underground because I don't want 1 million people to signed up and start downloading stuff.
To join the project, send an e-mail to wiriadis@uiuc.edu
the subject must be "GENTOO MUSIC SUBSCRIBE"
Put the following information in your e-mail
1. desired username
2. gentoo.org username (just to make sure you are a gentoo-er)
3. music skill
4. other skill (anything appropriate)
Once I got your e-mail, i'll make an account, and send you my IP address and temporary password. This is not an automated process, so don't send me multiply e-mails just because you don't get immediate response. Please wait until at least a week before sending another e-mail.
-------------------------------------------------------------
How it works:
We don't have any software (yet) to keep everything on track. So right now we have manual version tracking system.
In your home directory, you must have the following directories:
./music/
./music/archive
./music/finished
These directories must have read permission for all users, so people can download them.
Reccord your track, and encode it to ogg format. Then upload it to your music/ directory. If you make an addition to the same song, move the old one to archive (or delete it if you think it's bad). If you think a particular song is ready for production, then move it to finished. By the end of the project, we will vote from these "finished" songs.
Also, I will put a special directory /home/announce. I will put member list and some other informations there. Main communication will be on this gentoo.org forum.
That should our project going for now. If we have a large ammount of people joining, I will reorganize things a little bit to make it easier to find a song.
I'm waiting ... _________________ /etc/init.d/alsasound start

Just found this thread here Count me in, I'm also extremely interested in any linux solutions. Currently I'm still using Cubase 'cause it just gives me best opportunities to achieve the results I want.
Ah just if anyone wonders: I'm a singer now for 12 years and even though I'm composing, but I'm still more of a singer/lyricist |

Some software that might be helpful
1. Audacity - A great wave editor, not really a music composition program but deffinetly an excellent tool. I've been using this to make some sound effects for an open source game lately. audacity.sourceforge.net
2. Skale Tracker - A new traker in the spirit of Fast Tracker. www.skale.org |

Oh really?? cool.. what about disk space?
Pretty much we are just going to use mp3 or ogg to exchange ideas. After we get some decent songs, then we can start production phase with everybody sending (high quality) wav files.
Anyway, dodger10k if you are a lyricist then you can start right here in this forum!!! (my lyrics is limited to gentoooogentogentooogentiduduu)
Oh, if you are not an english speaker, then it would be even better, as long as you give us the translation _________________ /etc/init.d/alsasound start

Well I´m rather more concerned about traffic than webspace, so any ideas about what we´re talking here?
And well, I write a lot of lyrics but usually I keep them archived for own songs, gotta think about that (Besides: No I´m no native speaker but I only write english lyrics ) |

Hmm.. i have said earlier in this thread that my ideal gentoo song is the one that is a fusion of different genre put together, as a representation of freedom. I think as long as you can afford some mp3's download per day then we can get this thing going.
Let's see... this is a gentoo theme song, but I think using the word gentoo or linux over and over again is cheesy (you can take a look at the BSD theme song lyrics, I think it's horrible).
It can be a song about something precious that not many people know, or about a true freedom (freedom in windows is just an illusion), or our way of life. Well, be creative _________________ /etc/init.d/alsasound start

Let´s put it this way: Let´s start it, if the traffic causes me sleepless nights we´ll talk about it again. For details about setup send me a PM please.
