I cant print anything. Linux doesn't regonise my printer (Epson Stylus Color 440, paraller port printer). I went to Gentoo's site and found an article on how to make printer work in Linux. First of all, it was for Gnome and I use Kde. And suprise suprise, I have to compile it (paraller port printer driver) to the damn kernel. There's something terribly wrong with that OS - There is always need to compile something to kernel. It's the most irritating thing I know. IT IS JUST A PRINTER, why can't I just select file menu and then print?

There is no 'lp0' in /dev/. I've done make menuconfig --> enabled paraller port printer, then make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install. Nothing.

Then the permanent problem, apm won't work. Anyone has solution, everything is enabled in kernel.

God bless Windows.... Perkele..

As far as APM not working, this is a grab-bag thing. Not all hardware is the same, not all hardware honors all calls to it. What exactally doesn't work about it? If you tell us the symptoms, we can be more productive about the problem.

The printing is best handled by washing out anything you've changed and installing APSFILTER. It's under net-print. Last time I installed it, it launched right into the configuration process immediatly. Once it's put together, it should end the diatribe from the printer and you'll find that you can just do a FILE->PRINT. :-)

I spent 24+ hours trying to get cups working and it was still messed up when I gave APSFilter a try. I can't believe how simple that was. It took less than 10 min including the emerge, thank you so much for posting that. Now I can get rid of CUPS and not have to deal with it anymore.
