switching to bdelta seems to require the bpacth util but the ebuild doesnt depend on it.

It is included in the ebuild:
Code:
# qlist bdelta
/usr/bin/bdelta
/usr/bin/bpatch
/usr/lib/libbdelta.so
/usr/share/doc/bdelta-0.1.0/README.gz

i was not refering to the bdelta ebuild requiring bpatch, but the deltup ebuild which one is told to install, doesnt, (or didnt) bdelta / bpatch

PostPosted: Fri Dec 16, 2005 3:13 am    Post subject: 404 Errors Reply with quote

I am also getting the 404 errors that others have been getting as of late. They happen quite frequently on various packages, not just the example I gave.

I have been idling in the #dynamic-deltup-server channel on freenode for the past 5 days with no answer yet. I have also emailed "nlissne A|T linux01 (D/OT) gwdg [DO\T] de" with errors.

Any help or insight into this problem would be much appreciated.

How about to add NOT downloading full file OPTION from original URL in case dtu could not be fetched ?

It is stupid to download big files especially when delta-server not available at the moment. I want to use this script at night and sleep in cold blood.

Couldn't you just enter a bogus mirror in /etc/make.conf? Or perhaps it falls back to the default?

PostPosted: Mon Jan 23, 2006 6:00 pm    Post subject: deltup dead? dieing? Reply with quote

By the inconsistant patch building and continuing error I have, mirrored by others, as well, I'm guessing deltup is history?

I've checked the page as well and see nothing to confirm this. Due to additional errors in portage since doing an emerge --sync last weekend I'm wondering if portage 2.0.53 is part of the problem or, perhaps emerge-webrsync, which I'd never used. I tried it this time due to numerous abortive attempts at -sync'ing. Problems with my /var/db/pkg which is a first raise this question.

Any suggestions beyond ones I've seen and tried would be helpful, e.g. 'rm -rf /var/db/pkg/<package> && emerge <package>

On deltup I'm getting "Connecting to www.rthwlr.net|212.227.65.2|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found..."

Is this server down...or worse yet, hacked?

There is one other question. The original version of bzip2 required is now updated on my machine. it was 1.0.3, but now 1.0.3-r5. I wonder if this version change is part of the problem?

www.rthwlr.net

Thanks

I think that it is really MUSTDO feature to make the delta DEFAULT in portage.
What is the problem? There are 2 problems :
1) Need a really good big server, connected to internet;
2) Need to terminate the problem with sequrity in the source code in delta.
Look at this russian page. This is a vote "Do you need a russian deltup server?".
240 votes sad YES.
Only 22 people sad no!
122 - don't care, not use it, or not know what is at all!
SUSe & FreeBSD have analogs of delta.
Gentoo MUST be the BEST, MUST include this MEGA FEATURE as default!

Now it is useless it always returns 404 Not Found. Maybe more people should help to create dserver (sf.net/projects/dserver) ?

And what about such system:
System I
1) All of users have their own local deltup server. When emerge trys to download package this local deltup server trys to find dtu in the web (ftp , p2p) if it fails it downloads full package, creates dtu and provides it to getdelta.sh
2) This newly created dtu is uploaded to some ftp and/or shared in p2p.
3) In future other users will download this new dtu.
System II
All gentoo mirrors provide one distfile per package and a lot of small dtus for them ( it could even decrease space usage)
AIf dtu not found on mirror than user have to use dynamic deltup server.

Adeded: As I can see this is like GLEP 9 and GLEP 25. But they both are deffered.

PostPosted: Sat Feb 18, 2006 2:21 pm    Post subject: About compression Reply with quote

All files in gentoo distfiles are compressed with gzip ot bzip2. But LZMA compression (7z-zip) provides better compression rates (30% better than gzip and 15% better then bzip2). Decompression is like gzip and 2-5 times faster than bzip2. So I gentoo team can't repack all files to use LZMA compression? It will decrease space and traffic usage on mirrors and provide faster downloads for users. LZMA can be used euther by p7zip or exactly like gzip or bzip2 using LZMA utils (http://tukaani.org/lzma/ see benchmarks).
PS: Why no answers for week?

I suppose the rest of us got broadband connection. :P

No, really, anything that reduces bandwidth is a good thing of course. But since deltup has been acting strange lately I suppose people have lost interest.

So we need to repair deltup and provide another methods of minimizing internet usage. Some people have broaband and pay for traffic, so lzma and deltup is good for them.

It seems deltup doesn't work at all for more than 2 months. Is it down at all? Any plans to repair it?

I think that gentoo should setup its own deltup server. As the only one we see is not maintained at all. I tried to write to athor but he didn't respond.

Starting to look like the getdelta project is dead.

It is not a solution, but it suggests somethings.

See my post here:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-364740-highlight-.html

With the settings I was using I saw my que position at 1074 and 1177. It was mostly at 1177, so I suspect that I am either just too far away or perhaps "black listed?" Why I would not know, but at this point I will probably do my last Gentoo update and live with what I have, Nah!

Deltup was a nice idea, but when the AMD 64 began support it was killed for me.

An update to my experience with deltup says that I may be being clobbered by the broadband folks. I've treid differrent combinations of packages to down load and the last one, trying to grabd the kde 3.5.1 get me to a que position of 68. Even after 30 minutes it finally times out and begins to do a full download.

If have all linux users are on broadband, I'll bet the poor dialup folks will always be pushed to the back of the line. :-(

Still deltup was a great idea. I really do appreciate it for how ever long I had it.

I guess this problem was resolved. I tried getdelta for the first time this weekend and it worked great for me. I wish I would have known about this years ago. :D

I'm getting following warning with portage-2.2_rc28
Code:
!!! FETCHCOMMAND does not contain the required ${FILE} parameter.
!!! Refer to the make.conf(5) man page for information about how to
!!! correctly specify FETCHCOMMAND and RESUMECOMMAND.

What will be the correct command for portage 2.2?

+1, same annoying thing with portage 2.1.6.11 (now is stable).

you can switch the warning off by "fooling portage":
Code:
FETCHCOMMAND="/usr/bin/getdelta.sh \${URI} \# \${FILE}"

THIS IS ONLY A TRICK TO SWITCH THE MESSAGE OFF, NOT THE WAY IT SHOULD BE!!!

PostPosted: Sat Jun 13, 2009 1:52 pm    Post subject: getdelta seg fault Reply with quote

alexdu, thanks for the post on the message being generated. I, too, began to see this after a portage upgrade some time back.

I just had another upgrade and now I'm seeing seg faults. Does anyone have a patch or other suggestion on fixing that.

I finally upgraded from dial up to DSL - am I happy! - but I do want to continue using deltup to simply save bandwidth.

Suggestions?

Thanks.
