what i'd like is for netapplet to show the ap in the list of available ap's. right now it just shows "hidden" but you can't actually select it to (re)connect, even if you connected to it before (i.e. either by adding it manually via iwconfig in a terminal or typing it into the "other" selection in netapplet). |
Hmm... I've been thinking along similiar lines with some of the ESSIDs it displays. Maybe a list of "preferred" ESSIDs listed above current wireless networks? |

It's there when I startup, but it seems like if something else is added to the notification area, like starting gaim up, the icon disappears. A small invisble rectangle is still clickable, so it's not that critical, but I was just curious if anyone knew anything about it. Tried changing icon/desktop themes, but it still happens.

That's pretty strange that starting up gaim/etc. would kill the applet-specific icons. I'll take a look at the logic, but I'm not seeing the same problem. |

Yes, although, have you played with these new scripts in baselayout/from Uberlord? I confess I've been a bit put off by the length of the threads to even get started, but seems like integrating the two to manage preferred networks would be nice....

Exactly. I've been using the new baselayout (masked, if you want to check it out) for a few days now and have had no issues with the net scripts. My plan was to do a little bit of hacking to requring the new version so that it can take advantage of the better wireless support.
There's also some new stuff in CVS with regard to netapplet, so the next version of the ebuild (coming eventually ) will include that as well. |

I've noticed that netapplet has reached a '1.0' release, or rather it just doesn't have a version number attached anymore will there be an ebuild soon or is there a patch available? I have the source for this final release but it doesn't run to well considering how it needs KDE components. _________________ "Subtraction: Addition's tricky pal." --David Letterman

| Are you referring to the plain netapplet.tar.gz that's sitting there in rml's space? I don't think that's a 1.0 release -- it's been there for awhile. I checked the CVS, and the latest version bump that's been committed is 0.98.4. |

My mistake ~ I had been keeping my eye on netapplet for a while and I had thought that netapplet.tar.gz was new.
Which package is best to use? And which patch? _________________ "Subtraction: Addition's tricky pal." --David Letterman

Wow. I've been wanting to use this app since I saw first saw it on RML's blog. I finally installed it using the ebuilds from ecatmur's website.
I must say, I am *impressed.* This has to be one of the best things to happen to Linux on notebooks all this year. |

hey, that does look cool. piktchas here: http://people.redhat.com/dcbw/NetworkManager/
I'd give it a shot, to compare against netapplet--*after* I fix whatever is wrong with my 2.6.9 kernel. Sounds like it needs hal and dbus, which are both masked--any issues using those packages? |

Hey! I'm running version r5 of this applet and it works like a charm!!! I'm using it with waproamd to find availible networks. The only thing I'm missing is to autoswitch to the cable when I got a cable hook up and autoback to wireless when I unhook the cable...
Is there anyway to get that autoswitching? |

| There is a new 1.0.0 version over at http://primates.ximian.com/~rml/netapplet/ Maybe someone can fix an ebuild for it? I really don't now what the changes are because the changelog is empty... I saw that breakmygentoo has an ebuild for the redah networkmanager thingy... that one seem so cool... hotpluggine wired/wireless... Would love that in my laptop... |

I just noticed the new 1.0.0 version as well. I'll take a look at the changes and see if I can't get a new ebuild up in the next few days. I took a quick look at the changes between .98 and 1.0 and they are not bad. They added some i18n support and a few other fixes here and there.

I just gave NetworkMonitor a try, but I can't say it really works. In fact, it's a true gtk/glib app in the sense that the error messages it spits out are of no good to anyone but the developer who wrote it...
This is what I get:
| Code: | * Starting NetworkManager...
** (process:21425): CRITICAL **: file NetworkManagerDevice.c: line 368 (nm_device_unref): assertion `dev != NULL' failed [ !! ] |
Has anyone managed to get it running, yet? |

I have emerged the new 1.0-r1 ebuild, but when i start i get one of two things:
a) On my main pc, I see a red cross, and the icon isnt clickable at all (here)
b) On my laptop, I get no icon at all, and it is also non-clickable(here - the gap before the clock applet)
Here is the output i recieve from running "netapplet" in the terminal under user:
| Code: | matt@MattPC ~ $ netapplet
1104775734: outgoing: list_interfaces
1104775734: outgoing: get_active
1104775734: incoming: active eth0
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x08050962 *** |
Any ideas? |

I have made lots of code improvements and cleanups since the last patch released. Please give the new r6 a shot and see if you luck improves. If not post back and we can try and figure out what your problem is. I may need to send you another patch to enable more debug information.... thanks
get the new code here

credo,
i think if know what is happening when your netapplet dies. netapplet is expecting to received a 'interfaces' command before the 'active' command. If my thinking is correct the new r6 code should fix your problem, although the tool shouldn't crash either way =) i'll look into putting a safe guard so that doesn't happen in the future.

Keep up the fantastic work. |

I'm also getting the behavior credo initially reported, (the red cross that is not clickable).
| Code: |
$ netapplet
1105389944: outgoing: get_interfaces
1105389944: outgoing: get_active
1105389944: outgoing: get_keys
1105389944: outgoing: get_preferred_aps
1105389944: incoming: active eth1
|
Interestingly enough, killing and restarting netapplet returns credo's other reported behavior: no icon (but a space where the icon would be is created), not clickable.
I'm using fergus' new 1.0.0-r6 ebuild. FWIW, I'm also using baselayout-1.11.7-r2. |

| Code: | checking for libgnomeui-2.0 libglade-2.0... Package libgnomeui-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libgnomeui-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libgnomeui-2.0' found
configure: error: Library requirements (libgnomeui-2.0 libglade-2.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them

Needs to have some dependencies added it seems. |

pangloss,
Can you post the output of `cat /proc/net/dev`. I recently updated the code to parse this file for network devices and then verify that you have the associated network script in /etc/init.d/. Can you verify that you have net.XXX script for each device in /proc/net/dev?
credo,
what changed? I am just trying to figure out why it would just start working... did you switch to the new code? not loading nic driver?
As for ebuild dependencies.. i'll have to work on that =)
