No -- if sendmail can't resolve a hostname and that's causing problems for you, simply place that in /etc/hosts and all should be well.
Even if you're trying to do something funky like RBL checks or reverse domain name mapping, you still don't need bind installed on your server as long as you can connect to one of the name servers defined in /etc/resolv.conf.
