I am trying to install Gentoo 1.4 on a Compaq 910US. The livecd-basic will not even boot. From the message I can see (it speeds by so quick and I don't know if I can log this) hda is not accessible nor is hdc. It won't even mount the cdrom as a file system. It is my belief that the kernel cannot probe the IDE controller on this system. Am I on track on this? What can be done, if anything?
Thanks,
John |

Upon further digging (google) I found this info.
The kernel is unable to reliably probe the ALi M5229 IDE controller. To fix this problem, you must add the following kernel option to your lilo configuration file:
append= "ide0=0x1f0,0x3f6,14"
The compaq 910us utilizes that exact ide controller. However, the web paged referred to a 2.2 kernel (rh6). Would that problem still exist?
If so, how can I use ide params with the gentoo boot cd? |

I'm running Gentoo 1.2 on my Compaq 931US, on boot I get "VP_IDE: detected chipset, but driver not compiled in!", it runs though! Real good. 6 day uptime now and no problems whatsoever. _________________ open like a child's mind. |
