Topic says it all. But if I set my hostname to localhost, samba (and then vmware) tends to complain rather badly--plus, my intended hostname of nosferatu is soooo much cooler

So, if my hostname is localhost, apache is fine, but samba and vmware break. If my hostname is anything else, apache won't start (and complains with the following error in /etc/apache/logs/error_log:

Code:

[Mon Nov  4 17:37:14 2002] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("nosferatu")

I get the suspect feeling that this is a case of RTFM, but I've looked everywhere I know, and my proficiency with the apache conf files is sorta blah, so... *mutter*

Sorry to bug, and thanks. :)

according to this it allows every http request to have an unique id based on ip, pid, and time. don't ask me what it's good for. i have no clue.

Feh, I just commented out the relevant lines in apache.conf, and it works, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna bite me in the ass later.
Thanks!

Adding hostname to /etc/hosts works :D

I found the same fix in this thread:

samba will like the HOSTS file.
now....if that box happens to be on the NET all the time with a STATIC IP then go get a pretty DNS name and buy it set its to what ever website you got out there, then call up your DNS provider and tell them you want to add a A-RECORD.....give them the IP of that machine.
now go into your Apache Config file and set your host name and domain name.
it will take about 48 hrs.
your host name in samba doesnt have to be the same as your real DNS host name (samba is NB/apache is DNS).
try it...its fun and its how REAL websites are viewable.

oh ya if you realy went and did this kill your HOSTS entry cuz it will battle with DNS. :P
