i can't get alsa-0.9.0_rc2 to work - everything got installed without a problem, modules loaded (used driver snd-powermac), channels unmuted - and still - no sound. aplay executes without errors, as if everything worked.
XMMS on the other hand fails to start saying(it worked fine with OSS dmasound_pmac):
xmms: simple.c:1376: snd_mixer_selem_get_playback_volume: Assertion `(unsigned int) channel < s->str[0].channels' failed.
Aborted
i rebuilt it with alsa use option, emerged alsa-xmms, to no avail.
Does this sound familiair to any of you? thanks in advance |

Yes, alsa is horribly broken for ppc, some machines it works, others it doesn't
I suggest OSS drivers |

My biggest success with Gentoo and sound on Powerbook/Pismo was the beep, which required i2c-core, needed by dmasound_pmac. hmm... YDl played everything just fine and without i2c. That strange. Another strange thing: now I cannot switch between virtual terminals. What is more important - the beep sound or virtual terminal switch? Decisions, decisions...
Anyway. I want my sound, at least in quality as it was in YDL. Doesn't matter - with alsa or without.
So, what's the procedure to get OSS working on Powerbook? Is there any link or document I can read about? Gentoo documentation is not consistent in some places when it comes to combination of alsa and ppc. How about OSS?
I've compiled OSS as a moudule (sound.o, right?), but even with it amixer doesn't work anyway. Any idea? |
