6.8.1-r1 on Intel 82865G

Post by dReWz » Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:41 pm

Hello, gurus!

I tried emerging 6.8.0 and 6.8.0-r1 with the same result. Everything is super slow. after "/etc/init.d/xdm start" (using kde 3.3.0), everything comes up, but all in very slow motion. I can get to the desktop after 3 minutes. and can even start console (after 5 minutes) just so that i can get 6.7.0-r2 back.

Anybody seen this happening on intel motherboard with built in graphics controller. 2.6.8-r3 kernel detects my graphics as i830; 2.6.9_rc2 can be tweaked to see it as i915. new xorg-x11 doesn't work well with either.
On the same chipset and config, 6.7.0-r2 works flawlessly, but, man, i want to check out the new features though

here's my dmesg relevant portions:

Code: Select all

Linux version 2.6.8-gentoo-r3 (root@komputer) (gcc version 3.3.4 20040623 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.4-r1, ssp-3.3.2-2, pie-8.7.6)) #9 SMP Sun Aug 29 14:28:14 PDT 2004
and

Code: Select all

Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected an Intel 865 Chipset.
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 925M
agpgart: Detected 16252K stolen memory.
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xf0000000
[drm] Initialized i830 1.3.2 20021108 on minor 0: Intel Corp. 82865G Integrated Graphics Device
Please let me know what i can try or if there's any other info needed to troubleshoot it.

Thanks,
dReWz

I emerge xorg again ths time around it was still very slow I notice some fonts weren't getting loaded tried fc-cache -fv and noticed some of the font directories didn't have any fonts in them so I removed them from xorg.conf then exited X at this point I notice the speedo module wasn't getting loaded so I went back and commented that out then started X again and came up quick and windows open a whole lot faster. before I count 8 seconds just to open gkrellm now it opens within a second

i just finished emerging xorg, and everything is fine. However, when I go to edit my xorg.conf by adding

Code: Select all

Section "Extensions"
          Option "Composite" "Enable"
          Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection
I get an error message that states: "Extensions is not a valid section name" when I startx.

Im using my XF86config file from xfree as my xorg.conf. Could this be the problem?

/me 's tried removing speedo, tried running fc-cache -f as root, tried changing display driver (fglrx/radeon), tried taking out all the non valid font paths from xorg.conf, nothing helps... something is defenatly horribly broke in this version in xorg, I just really wish I could figure out what breaks.

when starting kdm I see that grey/black screen X shows without anything running for a good 10 seconds before kdm comes up.... I'd never seen that before, not long enough to notice anyway, and now I'm sitting here for ages on a 2ghz box.

I wish they would've invested more time cleaning up these bugs before releaseing r1. :(

-r1 is not a bug-fix release. but rather addresses two security
vulnerabilities found in the 6.8 code base

Thank you so much for pointing this out. Perhaps it has been said elsewhere, but I could never find a answer. I just switched to Fluxbox bout a month ago and Xorg 6.8 two weeks ago and it's been driving me crazy. BTW, Xorg 6.8 is great!!

Just wanted to say thanks and this is why gentoo forums are such a great resource!
