Hey felow Gentoo-ers!
I bought a reseller web hosting package and I don't currently use all the space. I can give away to anyone some space, bandwidth, mysql, php, perl, email (pop3 and imap), etc, etc - it's got the lot!
If anyone want's me to host them then drop me an email - matt@galloway.me.uk - I will give it for a small donation every now and then from you - PayPal is probably easiest, but don't worry if you can't pay, I'll still think about giving you some space, just not so much hehe!
Of course, it's Linux hosting! _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

I always have been looking for free hosting space for a blog or a fun site, like your http://yourowndisaster.net . But at the end of the day I feel bad that I am using somebody space and not paying. (I would donate if I could). btw ... I like your logo you use on the site ... the style too ... _________________ What? Where? When? |

Hey dont feel bad about it... i mean as long as you use the server in a well manered way..
(example) dont suck up all the bandwidt and stuff like that.. i dont really have a problem with hosting peoples websites.. i mean is a pleasure to know im helping someone do something they been wanted to do a a while now..
and if i have the resouces why not? right...
if you want me to host ur website.. just email me and and send me a subdomain name for me to add to the dns entries..
i will also need a ftp username and password so that you can upload some files.. and if your gonna use a CMS and give the mysql database name with a username and password so that your CMS can access it!
like i said before... aslong as you dont abuse the thing i really dont have a problem with it..

Seeing as I'm getting a big response here, can some of you guys check out:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=207254
I'm thinking of creating a server at home for files, etc - and I need advice. Especially on DNS stuff - how can I do it like web hosting people do? _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

I'd probably take you guys up on the offers if I had something to put on the site. At the moment I'm too busy with work to have time to really do anything. I'll keep you guys in mind though for when I go back to school. Where are the servers located? _________________ generic signature here. |

I prefer running my own server; more control and whatnot. Even on a dynamic IP from my cable provider, it's dirt simple. I use one of DynDns' free domain names. Even with port 80 blocked (stupid isp, grrr...) I just use a webhop and redirect it to another port. I have even heard of people set their server to query their own IP address and update their DNS service automatically. I've never looked into this further as my "dynamic" ip only changes when my modem loses power, which is never. Still, it can be done. IMO, there is no reason why anyone can't run their own server. |

Dial up.
But, one would expect that anyone runing a linux system via a network install has ASDL as the min. If not we all salute you, (and bet you don't have to pay a fee for local rate calls).
I was a bit surprised to see people offering to host on their user setup, i was expecting these to be servers sitting at a dedicated or colocate server setup. If a site ever gets popular for a little for a little while your line could get saturated quite easily, still it sounds like good fun so power to you. |

True True both of your comments are true..
The one about the line getting saturated is also important....
but in the future like say in 2-3 months i will be getting Business grade dsl just like at work...
6-9Mbs Down | 896Kbs Up
still not much.. but hey.. its something and as along i can share that with someone and help them im happy.. because im returning all the help i got from you guys to people out there! |

The server I am offering hosting on ISN'T my own server - it's a server located with 1000rpm.net - I bought a reseller account from them because I have so many websites I manage now!
Still, the offer is there - if anyone has a domain and wants to park it with me, then cool - I'll give you some web space and email, mysql, blah blah blah!!! _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

That's very kind of you all.
Actually, I was looking for a place to host a personal picture gallery for my family/friends using app-misc/gallery which I first imported to portage and although it won't be very offently visited the high res images may take some bandwidth and I wouldn't want my pics to take someone's home bandwidth. I'd use my own desktop computer as a server for it but I only have 100Kbit/s upload
What do you think?
Greetings and thank you in advance. _________________ .:: ViCToR ::. |

You can have some space on my server if you want.
I can give you say, 200mb? and 2gb transfer a month? I can always increase it if you need it and I have space lying around!
As for serving it yourself - remember that with the images being big - when someone wants to view one your whole network will slow down... _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

Both offers are very kind and despite I don't want to sound ungrateful I've been considering them both and maybe they don't fit for something like a photo album. mattjgalloway's offer is interesting since 2gB/month is for sure enough but 200Mb of free space is not that much (if you own a digital camera you'll know why And RedDawn's offer is great too, but downloading several images (of an average of 1,2mB size) at ~28kB/s may be a little frustrating
Surely your offers will be more than perfect for most projects, but a photo album needs plenty of disk space for pictures and a fast connection. So that I don't want to abuse of your offers, and I'll try to ask a friend of mine who manages a dedicated server.
Anyhow, I really appreciate it. Thank you guys. _________________ .:: ViCToR ::. |

It's a pretty fast one.
Ping www.galloway.me.uk if you want to test it.
By the way - whoever wanted picture hosting - try http://www.pic4u.co.uk/main.asp _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

Well, 1000rpm.net went down, lost all backups (that's all 1 of them) since January 2004, and the guys there are losers. They don't know how to work the system obviously!
I've now got better hosting somewhere else, so the offer is still open for free hosting but on a better more cranked up server (4 CPUs! YAY!).
And - DON'T TOUCH 1000rpm.net WITH A BIG FAT BARGEPOLE! _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux
