Hi all,

I am sorry to report that I have been unable to connect to the Internet through my Gentoo box, and, furthermore, I am stumped as to what could be causing the problem. I have a Netgear FA311/312 series Ethernet card that is directly connected to a cable modem. I am using the Tulip module and my version (might be important) is 1.2. I am hoping to connect using dhcp (considering it worked with the same machine over summer).

The error I have been receiving has been coming at boot when init tries to bring my device (eth0) up. It reads as follows:

"Failed to start services:
netmount failed to start" (or something to that effect)

My Windows Xp machine has been able to establish a connection and yet, for all of my feeble troubleshooting efforts, I have not been able to determine why the I can't get the Linux machine to connect.

Also, what should my /etc/hosts, /etc/conf.d/net, /etc/resolv.conf
read?

I am sorry to press this issue, but I am very frustrated and can't seem to locate the source of the error.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Try compiling the driver directly into your kernel.

Please post the exact error message, including spacing, spelling and punctuation. Google is invaluable in tracking down obscure error messages and problems, but only if you post the exact error message in the first place.

Well, I don't know what I did (psych, I do ;-) ) but, upon reconfiguring my /etc/hosts and /etc/conf.d/net files and plugging my Linux box into my router as opposed to the Cable modem,...

everything magically worked!

(Ironically, though, now my Windows XP Pro box won't establish a connection. Weird, huh?)

Well, I should be staying on my Linux machine anyway. There's PHP to be learned.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

HAND (Have a Nice Day)
