|
|
Last month, an alpha release that includes source that builds on Linux systems was posted.
Quote: |
This is the first Alpha release of the 1.8 series. In this binary snapshot you will find a new debug build of the Doomsday Engine and jDoom. This build is pretty much the first one that can be compiled and run after the nix-to-HEAD merge. |
This game ROCKs on windows, and I really can't wait until the Linux release.
Some nice features:
OpenGL
Hi-Res Textures
3d-models for enemies
Mouselook
Great lighting effects
...and lots of other things I'm probably forgetting
Check it out:

Thanks for that mental image... Christ
Anyways, I've been sticking with this for a long time now and each addon to the engine just makes it better and better, he announced a linux port a while back but I'm glad that the new engine should support it. Though to be honest, the only thing that keeps it from linux is DirectX 8 for controls and possibly sound. _________________ Smells like Barbeque |

I agree - jDoom is probably the best Doom port, especially when it comes to the graphics. Once this is done we should also see jHeretic & jHexen in Linux (drool ) |

For the record, alpha 3 is out, and claims to be playable -- I'll see if I can get it built _________________ -Zedd |

Hey Michael! Just downloaded the source and built it on my machine here at work. No problems whatsoever! Other than having to emerge sdl-net and sdl-mixer(which weren't installed yet), the compile was smooth as silk. Went out and found the Doom shareware WAD file and gave it a shot. It worked! That's about all I can say. The video card here in my machine at work is obviously not made for playing games on... So, it was unplayably slow, but I expect when I get home and build it on my machine there with it's Nvidia card, things should be much nicer. Anyway, the point of this post is...it works! Good luck giving it a shot tomorrow! Make sure you read through the "Compiling" file in the Build directory for the steps to get it going. Thanks for the link! _________________ /\/octurne |

Anyone knowledgeable on the topic feel like summarizing the differences between this and Doom Legacy? They look quite similar to me. I've been using Doom Legacy for years, but I've never tried jDoom before. |

jDoom has a lot more graphical enhancements, and much better support for things like 3D models. It is also a bit more configurable and a lot easier to configure. It supports Direct3D and OpenGL, has a much smoother mouse handling code and is just generally more beefed up and enhanced than Doom Legacy.
Legacy, on the other hand, is much more faithful to the original, and the developers have focused a lot on Boom (popular mod structure for Doom) support and 'hackish' stuff like that.
As far as I can remember, jDoom has a max of 16 players in multiplayer, and Legacy has a max of 32. _________________ War. War never changes. |

i compiled without a problem (i had to emerge sdl-net and openal) but i'm having problems running it. dedicated server runs fine (which is literally jdoom with the graphics and sound switched off) but running it normally creates problems with sdl. i have yet to investigate so i'll be back when i have a better idea of whats wrong. |

it works! just had to downgrade sdl-mixer from r2 back to r1 (i notice r2 has been hard masked now anyway...). Now all i have to do is download the model pack and it'll be perfect. |

How about an ebuild? I can't figure out how to make an ebuild, but that won't stop me from craving one! _________________ War. War never changes. |

"deng"?! Could you have given it a worse name? doomsday, jdoom, or randomname, but deng?

I don't want to sound anal but deng is the sourceforge project name for doomsday. It stands for doomsday engine |

That's not anal, but I still think that deng is less appropriate than jdoom or doomsday as ebuild names. Nevermind. At least it had a reason. I feel more at peace now, thanks. _________________ Want Free games?

I'm innocent!!
The name was not chosen by me.
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53793
Anyway thats the name of the .bz2 files, too. As have been said,
Code: | den=Doomsday ENGine |
It really annoys me that I have spent my free time reminding the developers a good program to be included in Portage, so all the community can enjoy it, and the only response I get is "what a stupid name have you chosen" when I didn't sugest the ebuild name. _________________ La PDA de tungsteno |

We are all very grateful for your efforts and I'm very glad that has been included in portage. You have brought jdoom to the gentoo masses! |

Please don't be sarcastic
You are right, all the work was from Hinrik, I only sugested the ebuild. BTW I apologise for being a bit rude Enjoy jdoom
EDIT: My Gentoo box got it's power supply fried (and the MoBo with it) and now I'm in a crappy Win98 box counting each day I cannot play with my loved OS. Can't exist a worse torture _________________ La PDA de tungsteno |
