Hey that's cool, i was thinking of setting that up, since I notice all the college students who live near me using (probably unknowlingly) my WiFi connection. I was thinking a week of access in return for a microbrewed six pack?
Thanx

Hi Dizzutch!
I just added a section on accounting to the HOWTO, so you can charge them on a per-Megabyte basis and have a beer every n MB.

How does the tun driver know which devices to tunnel packets for? Is this all automatic or does it require extra configuration?
Also, in your howto
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Chillispot_with_FreeRadius_and_MySQL#Network_and_Firewall_configuration
you suggest bringing up the master card but not configuring it. Does chillispot do this for you? How does one set the SSID of their hotspot without configuring their interface? I used
Code: | # ChilliSpot config
#config_wlan0="0.0.0.0"
config_wlan0="192.168.0.1"
mode_wlan0="master"
essid_wlan0="pirateNet"
channel_wlan0="9" |
to name, assign an ip to, and bring up my card. Is this correct or would chillispot do this anyway? Probably I should have used the 192.168.182 chillispot default subnet, but everything seems to be working except the DNS server, which I've now configured.
(sorry about the simul-PM but I thought this should go in the forums too) |

how would this work if I wanted to use two wired nics and a wifi AP (such as my wireless router)? _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.

So I guess the configuration would be for one card connected to the internet, one to a LAN, and the wifi card for a hotspot then? I don't think that the config would change at all. In fact, I believe that the card connected to the internet isn't mentioned in the HOWTO except where you are required to bring up the interface to provide an internet connection. I think that's all. |

I believe you would need to install chillispot on the wireless router, and probably configure it to use radius, sql, and apache on the 'server/radius/router'. I believe that in principle you could alternatively install it on the 'server/radius/router' to capture traffic from the LAN also if you wanted to authenticate LAN systems as well. You could issue different subnets for wireless and LAN clients to handle them separately. Not that I've done this, but it's what seems to make sense to me. |

Hmm, thats what I though as well.
I just want some kind of authentication system for wireless users. I am looking for something to implement into a production environment. We often have people from overseas visiting us, and it would be nice to have security on our wifi. Allowing them access to the internet but without actually allowing them access to our network.
I suppose in that sense, I could just use iptables and static routes.
hmm....
/me runs off to think about this one....
If anyone has any ideas or links that may help me, I welcome the advise. _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.
