I have the Hypersonic AX6, which is based on the Mitac 8355 laptop. The amd64 version of Gentoo runs just fine on this machine. However, when I'm running Linux, I can hear a high-pitched noise coming from the laptop (this does not happen in Windows). The volume of this noise is dependent on CPU speed, which I can change easily in Linux since the processor has AMD's (3400+ Mobile) PowerNow technology. When I'm using the 2.6.7 kernel on full processor speed, the noise is unbearable. It is tolerable at the lowest cpu setting, but I didn't buy this laptop to run it at its minimum speed! I've tried playing around with the kernel options, but nothing seems to affect this issue. I have discovered that the noise is considerably reduced with the 2.6.5 kernel, and I can run at full speed with this version. I'm just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problem, and I'm looking for some insight into what might be causing this. Thanks! |

Sounds like a CPU fan, on my opteron computer the motherboard has built in CPU fan speed handling. When I run Linux, and more specifically load the sensor modules it somehow turns off this hardware feature and the fan speeds automatically go up to full speed. _________________ -Kow |

Well, that's an idea, though I don't think that's it... I know what the CPU fan sounds like on this laptop just based on the CPU location and I've heard it at full speed, but that's not the type of noise I'm talking about. The noise I'm describing is a very high pitched whine, not a whirring noise like a fan. Also, the fact that changing the kernel amplifies the noise also makes me thinks it's probably not a fan of some kind. |
