|
|
I wonder if anyone have noticed this and can confirm the following:
At Uni we use NetBSD boxes and noticed the xfs fontserver running all the time.
So I came home and run:
rc-update add xfs default
as root
Rebooted for other reasons and anyway, pages on the internet and on the desktop seem to load noticeably faster.
Does this has anything to do with xfs caching the fonts ?
Looking for someone who knows more about this, but pages do seem to load faster. _________________ Sophisticated, cultivated, technically superior,

my xfs config file
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config
contains:
# no tcp, use sockets (faster ?!)
no-listen = tcp _________________ Sophisticated, cultivated, technically superior,

Amazingly faster. Wow. There's not really any benchmark to say "Hey, this is faster", but I can tell a distinct difference, even though I'm already on a fairly high-end system. |

I did a quick attempt at a benchmark. I turned xfs on and off with ...
Code: |
/etc/init.d/xfs start
/etc/init.d/xfs stop
|
... and informally tried to notice a difference.
I found that, in general, page loads were 0 to 1 second faster with xfs turned on. I'm on a pretty fast machine to begin with (Althlon 2000), so I'm not sure I would notice as much of a difference as others. Most of the page load time (in both cases) seemed to be internet latency (I'm on a dsl line, but it still can take a second or three).
That's enough for me to keep it on. Thanks for the tip, hungarian. |
