when i run an emerge clean, it unmerges the newest versions of some packages.... not off all, only some packages seem to have this problem

with the autoclean function, this is actually almost funny, since, for instance, a emerge mplayer -u will emerge a new version of mplayer only to automaticle unmerge it again

i have the newest portage and i do an emerge rsync every day or so...

Are you using the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS variable anywhere?

I'm using portage 2.0.43 without any problems. I normally have autoclean off, but I turned it on for a test. I emerged ttmkfdir (was on my list of -pu world). The new version was protected, and the old version was unmerged.

I have the same here:

>>> These are the packages that I would unmerge:

media-libs/libsdl
selected: 1.2.5
protected: 1.2.4.20020601
omitted: none

x11-libs/gtk+
selected: 2.0.6-r3
protected: 1.2.10-r9 2.0.6-r2
omitted: none

x11-misc/xscreensaver
selected: 4.06-r2
protected: 4.05-r3
omitted: none

media-libs/netpbm
selected: 9.12-r4
protected: 9.12-r3
omitted: none

>>> Packages in red are slated for removal.
>>> Packages in green will not be removed.

1.4 worked okay, so I think something has changed in the portage maintenance scripts recently. Hope there will be a solution soon. BTW, I noticed that the clean option no longer is explained in the portage manual.

There's a big neon warning in the postinstall for Portage 2.0.43 that basically begs and pleads you to turn autoclean on, or else library symlinks might get screwed up. I think this was a factor in all the people who had ncurses freak out on them recently.

I actually found it to work the other way. turned autoclean on and it went and broke all the library symlinks so now evolution and a few other gnome progs wont work

My intentions weren't to imply that anyone should turn it off.

I didn't save the PM to verify, but if I recall correctly, "autoclean on" causes problems with Naan Yaar's Script that will list package deps. that can be removed.

humzzz..... some packages that had this problem ,well euhm, haven't got it anymore...

apache for instance was affected here, and now it works just fine ... onle vim, vim-core and mplayer now have it here

and imagemagick failes to upgrade :/ (i think that my last emerge clean broke some things too)

and all this while the pc next to this one is also running gentoo 1.2...but without any problems....

where does it look to see which version is protected ?

it seems that unmerging and then emerging those packages again worked ...

now imagemagick ...going to try something, if that doesn't work, expect a new topic :/

I had this discussion with one of the portage gurus of Gentoo.
One of the problems you might have is that your counter, which counts the number of merges, is wrong. This could be the result of having multiple emerge sessions running or doing lost of merges.
Anyway,

Check /var/cache/edb/counter:

# cat /var/cache/edb/counter

And compare that with the following (thanks very much Nick):

Change directory to /var/db/pkg and then do this (on ONE line):

# for FILE in `find ./ -type f -name COUNTER`; do cat $FILE; echo; done |
sort -n | tail -n1

If the number returned differs from the value in /var/cache/edb/counter then please update the counter value with this value:

echo -n "1234" > /var/cache/edb/counter
(where 1234 is the returned value)

HTH

Gerard
