In my file tree, the /dev/sound/mixer do exist. i wonder it maybe okay if the mode of this node is changed and let normal users have the prerogatives to access this node. Meanwhile i suspect this will mar the whole system by this way.

so constructive suggestions expect here.

By default only root and the group audio have permission to audio devices. Have you tried adding said user to the audio group? Also check your audio setup in /etc/devfsd.conf.

devfs should take care of creating those sound nodes for you... 8O
And: if root can use xmms, but a normal user not it sounds like a problem with permissions...
Did you add the users to the audio group?

Are you using devfs? Did you ever have sound?

If you're using devfs then the device nodes won't be created unless proper permissions are given to your user. Add the non-root user to the audio group, and then see if it still isn't working.
