Because the node /dev/sound/mixer or/and /dev/mixer don't exist.

In my file tree, the /dev/sound/mixer do exist. i wonder it maybe okay if the mode of this node is changed and let normal users have the prerogatives to access this node. Meanwhile i suspect this will mar the whole system by this way.
so constructive suggestions expect here. |

By default only root and the group audio have permission to audio devices. Have you tried adding said user to the audio group? Also check your audio setup in /etc/devfsd.conf.

devfs should take care of creating those sound nodes for you...
And: if root can use xmms, but a normal user not it sounds like a problem with permissions...
Did you add the users to the audio group? |

Are you using devfs? Did you ever have sound? |

If you're using devfs then the device nodes won't be created unless proper permissions are given to your user. Add the non-root user to the audio group, and then see if it still isn't working. |
