Several months back I did an emerge on mplayer and some version installed. I did a cli for mplayer and it fired right up. Did not config anything.

I recently did an rsync and an emerge on the most recent ebuild of mplayer. Nothing I did would do anything. Which is still the case. I unmerged the the update and have installed an older version (seen below).

When I enter the command mplayer from an xterm and hit enter, zip happens. I have tried configuring /etc/mplayer.conf with vo=xv and sla with the same results.

I've searched google and this list; read the mplayer FAQ and manual ( the parts I had a chance of understanding )

I'm running gentoo 1.2, gcc 2.95.3.

It would be a big help if someone would point me to a plain english howto or to a typical config file.

On entering the command 'mplayer' with or without anything following it, I get the following:

MPlayer 0.90pre6-2.95.3 (C) 2000-2002 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS!)

CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Duron SF Spitfire (Family: 6, Stepping: 1)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx

/usr/share/mplayer/mplayer.conf(65): option without parameter

TIA, Bill

Have you had a look at the config file it mentions? The 65 looks like a line number, so try commenting out or changing whatever is on that line and run mplayer again.

Sorry, Wedge_. Yes I had. Line 65 is in the languages section and is specifically:

Code:
##
## Multiple languages are available :)
##
## Hungarian    igen    nem
English yes     no
## German       ja      nein
## Spanish      si      no
## Binary       1       0
##
## You can also use spaces and/or tabs.
##

the English line, which I uncommented. Thanks, Bill

Edit - 10/29: I just emereged the latest edition, did:
Code:
mv /etc/._cfg0000_mplayer.conf mplayer.conf

From cli ran "mplayer". Nothing. Edited ~/.mplayer.config with addition of:
Code:
gui = yes
vo = xv

From cli ran "mplayer" and it fired right up. The difference from my initial post was I did not try to configure anything in the /etc/mplayer.conf file, only the ~/.mplayer.config file. Bill
