Let me inform you for my latest observations

1)SSH HAS NOT relation to the problem

2)When kde crashes I run from an ssh session ps -aux where I see that X :0 uses only a small amount of cpu BUT as time goes by the cpu usage increases. I mean that the cpu usage increases 0,5 % every 3 seconds.(This is what hapenning to my system) It needs about 10 minutes to completly use the 99% of cpu.

3)PLEASE answer this. In my cases I notice that kde crashes only when I interact with it (mouse or keyboard clicks)
That means that NEVER has the kde froze without my interaction. For example watching video or other heavy processes will not freeze kde until I interact with it(a mouse click). Those cases can be when you click an application button ton launch firefox or when you select fastly files on file manager etc.
Some users can reproduce those lockups by pressing Ctrl and many times a mouse button.

What is happening on your system just before the lockup happens.Do you interact with it or a lockup can happen when you are away?

Way to reproduce the problem:On amarok collection options I have more than 50 directories of music when I click them one be one I always have a crash sometimes sooner (5th directory) sometimes later

I also have never had a freeze I have not triggered with a mouse or a keyboard.

- Writing in Konqueror's address bar. (the most common)
- Switching between browser windows, particularly but not necessarily while a page loads.
- Clicking refresh on a complex page, especially(?) combined with scrolling while it loads.
- Scrolling in JuK with the mouse wheel. (happened once, right after desktop change)

I'm not quite sure, but it may be that my freezes are never triggered by just one click. In most cases I have the time to write two letters in the address bar before it freezes, sometimes more.

It may be that I just don't use the kind of programs, like certain OpenGL screensavers, that are reported to cause lockups on their own. Indeed, I had GLX disabled for quite a while...

I don't know about ssh effects as I have nowhere to ssh from.

jdgill, if your computer stays up, please post a diff of your two kernel configs. It would really help narrow things down if we see what you changed to get a locking kernel.

I am still up and running after 24 hours ... I add that I have not been able to run that long over the past two weeks or so -- all of which were under the 2.6.11 kernel.

I did not realize I had DEBUG settings activated in my 2.6.11 kernel, otherwise I don't think any of the other differences means anything -- most are not set lines. Anyways, I am not a kernel hacker. Maybe this will mean more to someone else, or the fact that 2.6.10-r7 seems to be running OK for me -- although 24 hours is not a definite sign, but it is a good one.

Well, I have been running 34 hours now without an xorg lockup/crash/etc. There hasn't been the slightest indication of one going to happen either.

It seems switching back to 2.6.10-gentoo-r7 "fixed" my problem. I looked over the links posted by fotisaueb, and it seems they all suggest turning this or that off, or using a non-nvidia driver (the proprietary version) ... but if a 2.6.10 kernel would make your xorg stable, it seems downgrading the kernel would be the better solution to me.

If you are using an Nvidia card with the Nvidia driver 4x is automatically disabled. The driver only uses 2x on Via chipsets anyway. So users don't have to switch from 4x to 2x on the Nvidia cards.

Also, I am on a PCI Geforce FX 5200 with AGP turned off in the xorg.conf. Now if it is an AGP probem why do I have a problem on a PCI card?....

you mean PCI-X or something ?
My guess is that, even though the bus is called PCI, the way to access it uses the same code as agp does.

I'm using agp 4x on a VIA chipset...

I went through jdgill0's diff and compared it to my two known-freezing configs for 2.6.10-r4 and 2.6.11-r4. I found nothing that was shared by my two kernels and jdgill0's second but not the first. So if jdgill0's system stays up I think we'll have to dig deeper than configs.

From the Nvidia readme file:

"On Athlon motherboards with the VIA KX133 or 694X chip set, such as the
ASUS K7V motherboard, NVIDIA drivers default to AGP 2x mode to work around
insufficient drive strength on one of the signals. You can force AGP 4x
by setting NVreg_EnableVia4x to 1. Note that this may cause the system
to become unstable."

I'm sorry, after I re-read the file I noticed it didn't say all Via chipsets were set to 2x by default. Only some were.

My system is now up for 48 hours straight. I am convinced my system is now stable again. If there's any information I can give just let me know. All that time before when I had thought my KDE went crazy, it was really something happening between xorg and my 2.6.11-gentoo-r5/6.

Also, I point out -- the ONLY thing I have done to my system is change from 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 to 2.6.10-gentoo-r7.

In that case I'd like to know everything. Your hardware, full kernel config, and xorg.conf come to mind, as well as any special options in BIOS or elsewhere. I'd like to duplicate your situation as far as possible.

But first I think I'll try your specific kernel release to see if that's the solution. Here are snippets from the changelog. Perhaps something in one of those three releases fixed the problem but for some reason didn't get into 2.6.11.

Quote:

05 Feb 2005; Daniel Drake -gentoo-sources-2.6.10-r1.ebuild,
-gentoo-sources-2.6.10-r2.ebuild, gentoo-sources-2.6.10-r6.ebuild,
+gentoo-sources-2.6.10-r7.ebuild:
New fbsplash version. Fixes for cd/dvd writing, amd64 device suspend, UML
stack corruption, seagate sata_sil blacklist, aacraid, gdth, ALSA VX driver
memory corruption, clock running too fast during ACPI sleep. Added patch for
configurable root mount delay. Removed bt8xx patch as it doesn't work.
[...]
19 Jan 2005; Daniel Drake +gentoo-sources-2.6.10-r6.ebuild:
Add SCSI/RAID corruption fix, NFS super-io security fix, NFSACL sunrpc
security fix.
[...]
16 Jan 2005; John Mylchreest
+gentoo-sources-2.6.10-r5.ebuild:
Vesafb-tng and fbsplash updates which should fix a number of bugs. Also: Sidewinder
debug message fix, new smbfs DoS fix (solves bug 72968), vmscan writeback (OOM)
fix, ACPI video slab corruption fix, iptables ECN corruption fix. Security: new rlimit
memlock fix, SMP stack resize fix, uselib fix update. Hardware support: Readd support
for cx24110 DVB, and add storage drivers for: Promise PATA PDC2027x, Promise PATA
PDC2037x, ULi5281 SATA, VIA VT6421 SATA, ATI IXP300/IXP400 SATA.

ACPI video slab corruption fix?

I hope you are really stable now. I suspected I had corrected the problem more than once and it was not so.

now that is odd, i did the same switch with no luck :?.. ive tried 2.6.10-r6(and r7) and neither have alleviated any degree of the problem, the hangs are still easily produceable and occur every time i start kde, my workaround right now is simply to use fluxbox.. somehow i have the gut feeling this is related to the new Xorg extensions, like the transparancy/fancy gui effects module, i didnt have any issues whatsoever until i started fiddling with that stuff.. can anyone with these crashes tell me about composite extension on their own setups?

There are reproduceable hangs and random hangs. I and jdgill0 are having/had the latter form. It is unknown how much the problems have to do with each other.

jdgill0 have you compiled inotify in the good configuration or it is in the bad one? Probably this is the only option which makes some sense in the diff.

I have
Code:
CONFIG_INOTIFY=y

I actually have this in both the 2.6.10 and 2.6.11 kernels. In fact, I carried over the .config from 2.6.10 to 2.6.11.

Nerdanel,

You asked for some info like hardware list, .config, xorg.conf ... here is what I have .. if you need more let me know.

My hardware list -- don't think I missed anything:
-----------------------------------------------
SOYO SY-K7VTA Pro V1.0 motherboard ... I have done nothing to the bios -- it's in default config.
Athlon XP 1800+ cpu
768M of PC100/133 Ram.
Sound Blaster Live! sound card ... 3-4 yrs old, can't remember the exact model
Radeon 9000 Pro 128meg video card
Two ethernet cards running Tulip driver
5 hard drives -- all Western Digital
A generic cdrom
An I/O magic DVD burner

Here is my full kernel .config -- for brevities sake I removed all lines that had is not set -- this reduced the number of lines from 1438 to 760. For completeness, I used the following to generate the list
Code:
cat .config | sed -e 's/^.*is not set$//g' | sed -e '/^$/d'

Code:

Nerdanel,

If you just sent me a PM in reply to the one I sent you earlier, it seems the Forums automatically deleted it, i.e. even though I got the email for a PM, the PM does not exists :!:

jgdill0, one more question, have you ever used framebuffer, because I see that you don't have it in this particular configuration.

Nope. I have never used framebuffer, not even with the 2.6.11 kernels.

jdgill0, I didn't notice you had sent a PM for me before you told me. I am planning to wait a few days to see if my system is stable now.

Well, here goes ... shoot me if you want ... I just experienced another crash

I made some changes to my system -- switched to using tmpfs for /tmp and /var/tmp. Anyways I rebooted all was OK, except I needed to move some KDE stuff out of /tmp, I was in konsole setting up the appropriate env variables in .bashrc ... saved that, switched to another virt desktop and BOOM CRASH ... logged in via ssh --> xorg at +96% cpu usage.

I explain the /tmp business just to be clear that I was doing something "semi-major" to my system ... but the crash had all the systems of the previous crashes -- I made it 60 hours without a crash.

Sorry people ... looks like I am back to square one again :(

Yes. Downgrading to 6.8.0 was one of the first things I tried.

Ok I've installed the new xorg, and there seems to be more debug info, but this didn't help me in starting kde. Gnome starts fine, I must try to freeze it now, but I suppose this will be an easy task::))
Code:
