if you are using software raid and already have linux installed, then yes you have to start again.

this is beacuse it needs to create the new /dev/md device by combining the two hard drives.

same with hardware raid, it will wipe your hard drives to create the raid 0 array.

yes you can do it on a ppc - ofcourse because it just uses your two hard drives, connected to your ide ports. If linux supports your ide pots and hdd's, then it can do software raid.

there is a software raid guide under the documentation and tips area [url=https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=8813&highlight=software+raid+howto here[/url]

for some reason I can't load
Code:

#modprobe md

It says that "can't locate module md"

is it because im using a boot image of 1.2 ?

to do a raid 1. Do the HD have to have the same partitions? even the boot ?

thanks

hey - got your message :)

I think it should be the same when booting from 1.2 cd...

did you run
Code:
insmod ataraid
first?

with linux software raid, the partitions do not have to be in the same place, nor even the same size, but I would recommend that you have the same model hard drive, and setup all the partitions exactly the same, and yes even for /boot :)

I'll post my private message to you:

if you want to get 1.4rc1 up and running with raid, I can only suggest that you boot from a 1.2 / 1.3b cd (which has raid working)

but use a 1.4rc1 stage tarball.

that should work.

the end result will be the same as if you boot from a 1.4 cd, except that you will now have raid! icon_smile.gif

let me know how you go

Thats what im doing ...

im botting from a 1.2 cd then after i config the network use the wget command to get the 1.4rc1..

thats ok!

but for some reason the modules for the raid are not on that iso.

because when i trie to load it it won't find the module on the cd.

do you know where can i get the raid module for the ppc version?

(looks like im the only one that is trying to put a raid under a ppc with gentoo)

raid is not supported from the ISO's nor is it likely to be in the near future (for non hardware raids anyway)

it is possible, but not from the ISO.

If you want to proceeed I reccomend

a) installing a base system on a standard drive
b) configuring your raid in working gentoo system, then chroot and install a new system to raid
c) find some raid for linux howto's...it gets fairly involved for software raids and will likely require you to make a custom initrd.img to boot from

I'd boot fom a 1.2 cd, and just use the 1.4 tarballs.

and keep doing that until software raid is put back in.

I think there will be a big backlash abous this one.. ppl love their software raid on gentoo...

and what's the destinguish between hardware raid and software raid anyway? is a promise fasttrak controller considered harware ? when it's actually software driven ?

hope it is at least..

or make a new custom 1.4 cd for yourself :)

I think I mentioned a couple of times, that you'd need to isntall it from the 1.2 cd

you can't setup raid now that you've installed gentoo, cause it needs to wipe your partitions and make a new raid device.

yes but if I do that it says
Code:
cannot determine md version

Thats what i have been saying all the time!!

how to boot with raid support with out using your linux native hd?

remember that this is the ppc version of the boot cd not the x86

thanks

dude I'm not sure then.. I don't have a mac to play with.

... maybe if I can get my hands on one, I'll see what I can find out for you ?

can I ask you some questions about your mac ? I'm thinking of getting a titanium laptop, but dont' know if it's worth spending so much money on it..

do you know how it compares to say a p4 2ghz ?

the ram is only pc133, and that's pretty slow in comparision to pc3500 DDR... I dunno.. if it's much slower than a p4, I'll prob just get a p4..but the titanium is soooo nice ;)

any thing you can tell me would be much appreciated! and if I get a titanium, I can help you with linux! :P

dude, also found this:

create your own 1.4 cd

then you could add direct support for software raid into your kernel and then it should all work :)

of course I have yet to try this also ;)

and for me I think that the desktop replacements kick ass....

comparing to our ibook, gateway, compaq and pro-star that we use here ..
I would go for the pro-star ... is cheaper and you get more for less $$

check them out at
www.pro-star.com

Well I was not able to do my own boot CD because some files that this guide is talking about are not on the gentoo ppc iso

like:

/usr/src/-KernelVersion*/arch/ppc/boot/bzImage or /mnt/iso/isolinux/kerne

or

/mnt/iso/isolinux/rescue.gz

doesnt exit either on ppc

so any help?
