INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/agetty"

After installing the gentoo-dev-sources kernel (a clean install, reformatting all partitions) my boot sequence ends with numerous lines of:

INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/agetty"

followed by:
INIT: id "c1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: id "c2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: id "c3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: id "c4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: id "c5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

..and every 5 minutes it tries again with the same results...

what's up?
