I know, there is already a Printing-Howto, as well as the Gentoo Printing Guide. But since these seem very complicated compared to what I needed to get a HP Laserjet 5L working, here is a short Howto for this printer type (and probably, but not tested for a few others, see below).

1. Enable needed Kernel-Options (look at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml Gentoo Printing Guide - (2) Kernel Modules)

2. Emerge the CUPS, start the CUPS daemon:
Code:
# emerge cups
# /etc/init.d/cupsd start

3. Configure Cups via its comfortable Interface at (run in Konqueror or your favorite browser):
Code:
http://localhost:631/admin

- Login with root + root-password
- Add Printer
- Name: Choose Name
Location: for example /dev/lp0 for parallel port printers (I guess /dev/usb/lp0 for USB-printers)
Description: Your description
- Device: Choose your device ("Parallel Port #1" in my case)
- Choose your manufacturer (HP)
- Choose your printer type (HP Laserjet Series CUPS v1.1)

4. Add cups to your default runlevel
Code:
rc-update add cupsd default

(5. For KDE-Users: Choose CUPS as printing system in the Control Center - Devices - Printers)

Hope, this easy version of printer installation for some common printers works for you as good as it did for me.
Hugelmopf

PS: These printers seem to also work with this installation guide:
Code:

HP
   Color Laserjet Series PCL6
   Deskjet Series
   Laserjet Series
   Laserjet Series PCL6
   New Deskjet Series
Epson
   Stylus Color
   Stylus Photo
   New Stylus Color
   New Stylus Photo
Okidata
   9 PIN series
   24 PIN series
Dymo
   Label printer

I am trying to get my roommates HP DJ 3650 working. I tried the above method and was unsuccessful.

Instead, I emerged hpijs and created a PPD file:

Code:

localhost kernel # grep HP-DeskJet_3650 /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/*
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/hpijs.xml:   <id>printer/HP-DeskJet_3650</id>
localhost kernel # foomatic-configure -s cups -p HP-DeskJet_3650 -c file:/dev/usb/lp0 -n HPDeskjet3650 -d hpijs
Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3/Foomatic/DB.pm line 2160.
Use of uninitialized value in substitution (s///) at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3/Foomatic/DB.pm line 3389.

Despite the errors it still creates the PPD and my printer shows up in http://127.0.0.1:631/. The problem is when I try to print a test page, I get "Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds..."

dmesg
Code:

usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using address 4
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x7204

So the kernel sees the printer, but I cannot get it to work.

I have also tried downloading the PPD from linuxprinting.org to no avail.

Does anybody have any suggestions or will I have to boot into windows to print out my resume?

I tried 3 different .ppd files that were supposed to work with my LaserJet 5L, but only one of them actually worked. Hit up www.linuxprinting.org & grab some others from them to test out.

One question from me: How do the .ppd-files relate to the configuration I have described above? Do some ppd-files already come with CUPS and configuring it via the Web-Interface just chooses these? If so, will these give best results for the particular printer?

I have a configuration problem i think. I emerged cups and gimp-print (that is what linux printing said would be best driver for my model Epson CX 5200) I use kde wizzie to add printer. Its a usb printer. I compiled usb printer support into my kernel when i compiled it. Now my location should be /dev/usb/lp0 or somethign right, well i can go all the way through the wizzard with no problems. But when i try to print a test page nothign happens. I looked in /dev/usb/ and there was nothing there, do i need to make a symlink or what my printer was connected and powered on so i dont think that is an issue. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, because the wizard works fine, it localtes my driver for me anc everythjing i dunno what si wrong.

here is my dmesg taht corresponds to usb stuff...as you will see the drivers seem to be there but it did not detect my printer...

but i repeat when i plug my printer in there are no /dev/usb/usblp0 or /dev/usblp0 or anything like that i dont knwo what to do. Why wont my system recognize my usb devices GRRRRRRR

Oh yeah and i check the KDE Info Center uner USB and it found my USB controller and nothing else. I am not sure if devices are supposed to show up there but i just thought i would add that

Blacksaga - you rule!

I bought a Canon i560 yesterday (yeah I know, but it had a $30 rebate). Spent 6 hours following the one forum thread about getting it running but had ZERO results. Took it back today, grabbed an HP 3650, read this thread, and I can print!! WHOOHOOO!!!

And now for a nap :D

Seeing that this thread is getting a few hints, I was wondering if anyone here has a working HP LaserJet 1000.

Over in this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1636202 walrus_55 wrote a howto, but I have some questions on them, any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I meant HP LaserJet 1010.

I believe the LaserJet 1000 and LaserJet 1010 may be quite dissimilar models requiring different drivers. Here's what LinuxPrinting.org has to say about them:

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1000
